Nero 6 won't burn DVDs any more

I use XP Pro and recently reformatted my HD. Everything is fine but when I try to burn
a DVD using Nero 6, the disc just goes in, out, in, out and then a window comes up
asking me to insert a disc. After that it just crashes and I have to go to task
manager and shut down the program. The program burns CDs just fine. I've used these
Maxell DVD+R perfectly in the past. If I had another DVD around I'd try it just to see if
there's a compatibility issue for some reason. I installed Burnaware Free just to try another software, but the result is the same. Anybody got a clue?

I'm using V.6.03 of Nero Burn

thanks

I can't solve your problem, but if the media is bad it will say something about calibration failing. I threw out about 44 Imation DVDs a while ago - the first 6 were fine for some reason.....

I would try reinstalling Nero and see if that helps.

Sounds to me like your burner's DVD laser failed. There are two such lasers - one for CDR and the other DVD. If one works and the other doesn't, it is usually the hardware, not your software.

Have you tried running a DVD lens cleaner on it? If there is smoking in the room, that can be part of the problem, i.e., colloidal smoke particles clouding the lens.

My sense is, replace the burner.

Try reinstalling Nero. If that doesn't work, then there's probably something wrong with your burner. Try cleaning the lens. You can buy cleaning kits at places like Radio Shack. Try a different brand of discs as well. If that still doesn't work, replace the drive. They're cheap enough these days.

I've had similar problems with Nero, although I can't recall whether the symptoms are exactly as you describe. The problem is that the free version of Nero I got with my optical drive had a limited-time license for the transcoding software necessary to make MPEG4 files that are burned to a DVD. So after the initial trial period it could do all its other tasks, but would not burn DVD's, and sometimes with no explanation or with only cryptic notes. My guess is there may be nothing wrong with your burner or disks. You just need to buy software with DVD burning capability - and an old freebie Nero is not it.

By the way, re-installing probably won't help. Nero trial version leaves a hidden record that it was previously installed and its time has expired.

Nero General CleanTool and then use regedit to find and then delete all remaining references to Nero
