Nero 6 Issue

Just recently, within the past few days, Ive started having issues when trying to burn dvd discs with Nero Ultra 6.

For some reason, now whenever i burn a data disc or image to dvd, the whole computer crawls during the burn and the buffer level moves wildly from 11-98. Now so far the burn always completes, but if I set it to verify the disc, Nero will just freeze during the verification. Hitting stop does ntohing and even if I end the task, my whole system is affected and I have to restart the pc in order to get the dvd burner to eject the disc.

after a restart the disc is fine and has burned correctly, but this is definitely not normal.

if i turn off verification the burn will complete normally without freezing, but with the same buffer levels and slowing the whole system to a crawl.

Normally, I can run other things while its burning in the background without a problem and the buffer level would say constant.

I have an Athlon 64 3400+ and 1Gb of ram running Windows XP with SP 2. Anyone have any ideas why it would be doing this? Thanks

When you say the buffer level do you mean the buffer in software (toward the middle of the burn page in regular mode) or the hardware buffer on the device (toward the bottom)? If it's the buffer on the device I would try a different piece of DVD burning hardware. (Maybe a friend has a DVD writer he'll let you borrow?)

ok, i wasnt talking about the used read buffer which is in the middle of the page as you say.

I was refering to the 'buffer level' towards the bottom of the page.

now another problem has started.

even if i have the burn speed set to 8x, the burn takes 40-45 minutes. Im not using any differnt media, its the same Verbaitum discs ive always used.

Does this mean that the drive is failing and not a software issue?
