I'm sure it will be available for download right about CeBit time.

They are still tweaking it and adding a few features for the public release.

I had a new TDK 12x/10x/24x still sealed in it's box, waiting to be installed. On reading your post I opened it and couldn't find anything saying the Nero 5 it came with would be eligible for a free upgrade to Nero 5.5 when it appeared. I called TDK and the tech I got knew nothing about it either. I read the review you found and definitely want to upgrade to 5.5 when it becomes available. Where did you find that the upgrade would be available for free?
Thanks

I know the review concludes by saying "Current users of Nero 5 will probably be able to upgrade for free etc." but often that is only for users who purchased the software -- not to those who received it bundled with hardware.

The review claims that current users of Nero 5 will "probably"
be able to upgrade to 5.5 for free...That would be nice...

Seems the biggest improvements over 5 will be 1) The .wav editor
which seems to more-or-less duplicate the one that's in
WinOnCD 3.8 and (though I haven't played with this one) the
one in Roxio EZCD5; 2) More VCD creation options; 3) inclusion
of CDSpeed as part of the package.

Not incredible improvements, but nice enough if they work as
advertised.

I'm using Nero 5.0.3.8 right now, and love it.
Where it says that current users of Nero 5 will probably be able to upgrade for free probably refers to users that purchased the software and not to those that received it bundled with hardware.

The WAVE EDITOR feature seems very nice and i can see it being a rather nice and handy utility for me, that I would use a fair amount.
The VIDEO CD CREATION feature also seems excellent and very comprehensive though of little use to me personally.
The incorporation of CD Speed99 into Nero is great IMHO, as I use CD Speed99 myself, so that removes one program needed to be installed if it's bundled with Nero.
Overall it looks like quite few additions to the software to extend it's usefulness.

Anyone have any idea when it is due to be released?

It seems that there is going to be few Editions:

Nero 5.5 Share.

Nero 5.5 Retail Only.

Nero 5.5 special.

Some minor features will be Edition depended.

As long as they keep their overburn feature then it's all good. I love being able to burn CD's at 720 mb.
