I seriously feel like a cripple.

there is a new tech writer that sits next to me and he told me yesterday that he doesn't know how to type without looking at the keyboard. i was pretty surprised to hear that.

Try going through keyboard classes in high school with a cast down to your 2nd knuckle on all fingers. That wasn't fun. Still have bad habits to this day from that. I don't spacebar with my right hand even though it's my dominant hand.

id wager that the majority of the working world cant touch type.
is keyboarding even thought anymore in schools? or is it just assumed people know how to use it now?

I can type without looking at the keyboard but nearly all of it is done with my pointer and middle fingers

I had taken typing class in middle school, and I played the Mavis Beacon teaches typing games on our 386dx at home. When senior year in high school rolled around, I needed at least one class for an easy 'A', so I took typing.

By the time some of the other students around me noticed that I obviously was cruising for an easy grade, some of them asked about paying me for doing their lessons. I got two new pairs of expensive shoes off of my classmates that year.

Glad I'm not the only one that types like this (although in general I have to look at the keyboard). I still say I'm going to learn how to touch type one of these days, but I know I never will.

I can't really touch-type either at least not without making a ton of mistakes despite several years of typing in JHS/HS.

Still reasonably fast though.

You're supposed to spacebar with your dominant hand??? I type space with my left (non-dominant) hand as well. I never saw anything wrong with it.

I do tons of weird shit though. I drive with 2 feet (break with my left). I guess my brain is wired differently :awe:

They let you pass your driver's test doing that?? Pretty sure that was automatic failure back when I was learning how to drive (at least that's what they told us).

That is one of my biggest pet peeves in the whole world.

I space with my left, but I credit FPSes with teaching me that. You get so used to WSAD where spacebar is jump and your right hand is on the mouse, so your left thumb becomes the de facto spacebar striker. But I don't type in the traditional method either; I don't need to look at the keyboard (he says, looking at the keyboard), but I don't keep my hands over the home keys either. I just cobbled together a method that works for me.

I had a middle school typing class that taught me how to touch type. It was the kind of class that wouldn't be accepted today. If you looked at the keyboard, you were called out. If you kept doing it, the teacher would put half a box over your keyboard so you couldn't look at the keys. Today someone would cry and the teacher would get fired.

Meanwhile even the stupidest person in the class (probably me), learned how to touch type.

I can't type. Never learned in school, and haven't had much need for it otherwise.

I have many fingers, and I can type well with dvorak or qwerty layouts. Take away one of my fingers, and I dont think it would even phase me.

I didn't take any actual driving test that I can recall... Most of drivers ed as at-home.

Really? Breaking with your left does NOT mean that I ride the break. It's incredibly easy to have your foot just above the pedal or even off the pedal entirely.

And no, I have NEVER pushed both (Gas + break) in an "emergency" situation. Anyone that tells you this shit is obviously someone that hasn't tried it, nor has the mental capacity to do so.

I agree. That's how it should be done.

I fucking hated the whole concept of "Home row". Basically the "Rule" of keeping your 4 left fingers on asdf and your 4 right fingers on jkl;. Everything up or down of those is typed with the home row key-finger closest (above/below) it.

I type MUCH quicker than that bullshit, and I often only use my Index fingers. In reality, it basically comes down to your brain automatically knowing what key is next in the line-up, and your fingers automatically gravitating towards the next before the current key is done being pressed.

Learned how to touch type in middle school. Still useful today. Heck even on a landscape iPad I can touch type pretty quick and that's without using my pinkies.

You do realize that as soon as your brake pedal goes down even a couple MM, the brake light switch gets triggered?

Its possible that I often ride too close to the people in front of me and its possible that 2 foot drivers mess up my way of driving.

Possible....
