For example, I was at work this one time, and I overheard my boss talking about a guy who was being looked down upon because he couldn't operate excel the way they expected a college graduate to task on in a heavier financial environment.
 
Need for survival? Hardly. The ability to buy tons of useless stuff to make up for a lack of any sort of social/sex life, perhaps. The term nerd it seems is slowly being replaced by "geek" and "gamer", both of which amount to a tech obsessed loser except now people seem to be proud of the title.
