Neo HE550 or SL350?

I plan on running two rigs:
1) s939 file server with 5+ hdds and 7300gt, some cpu oc'ing
2) e6400 lga775 machine with 1 hdd (could get more in the future) and a vid card, possibly something like 8800gts or 1950xt. oc'ing as much as possible, NO SLI

The rig 2) has no vid card yet, and the rig 1) may get a vid card upgrade in the future.
Currenty, I only have an Antec Earthwatts 430W for the PSU.

That being said, I could either
1) use the EW430 in the main rig, get an SL350 ($14) for the secondary rig
2) get a Neo HE550 ($55) and use that in the main rig

My main concerns are price and reliability, though overclocking is somewhat important as well. Though I am quite convinced the SL350 would get its job done, not so sure about the EW430.

Any thoughts?

also, I have P180 and solo to devide up between the two machines. since I am not adding any fans to the solo, P180 is bound to have better cooling on it. Assuming that I plan to OC both equally as much, the main rig has a hotter vga, the other rig has more hdds. My intuative guess is to go with P180 on the main one. What do you think?

What i don`t get is -- "My main concerns are price and reliability, though overclocking is somewhat important as well. Though I am quite convinced the SL350 would get its job done, not so sure about the EW430. "

Then you go on to say--
That being said, I could either
1) use the EW430 in the main rig, get an SL350 ($14) for the secondary rig
2) get a Neo HE550 ($55) and use that in the main rig

I have always had reservations about any PSU proced at $14......

I would get any of the 2 Antecs-- the EW430 or the NeoHE.....

I just would never ever get a $14 PSU for any reason even to use as a back up PSU...

Good Luck!!

If you have not noticed, I did say it was USED, hence the price of $14. I got a $30 mobo from the same guy and its working VERY WELL. But the same logic, I doubt you would ever like $30 mobos either, but maybe thats just me. Ok, maybe I didn't make that but I already have a EW430, dont need to get 2 more to have 3 PSUs sitting around.

Now, some constructive remarks would be appreciated.

Still used or new......makes no difference. I would not buy a used Antec PSU plain and sinple!

You asked for an opinion!!
So I will tell you IMO it is totally goofy to buy a used PSU that is of the quality of an Antec sl350!!

yet the newer Antecs are rock solid!!
Seems like you have your mind already made up!!

Regardless of the price of the Motherboard I just would never buy a used older model Antec PSU!!

Also I could care less if the whole system is used......the PSU is the heart of the system.
It`s your decision go for it!!

Peace!!

Actually, I was going to go for neo he but too busy to get on it yesterday and missed it.
I do know PSUs are important. Just that I dont think a single core a64 paired up with a non-3d vga was going to be that demanding - a fitting job for a SL350 I reasoned. So I asked whether EW430 was good enough for the c2d (now, this one with a vga as power hungry as 1950xt, depending on which one I end up getting). I am aware that the wattage ratings are not something to live by, and there are conflicting reports as to how well that particular model holds up.

Anyway, point taken and have a nice day.

Peace!!

The earthwatts 430W is fine for the C2D rig. For the other one, 350W may be enough but as JEDIYoda mentioned, the newer Antecs are far better than the older ones. Many of the older series had capacitor failures.

Just keep an eye out for deals. Antec Basiq (made by FSP Group) are pretty cheap, but occasionally the earthwatts show up REALLY cheap. CompUSA had the 380W earthwatts for $35 with no rebates last month. Last week Newegg had the earthwatts 500W for $50 after rebate. The earthwatts are made by Seasonic.

yeah, I was aware of the basiq/EW lineup being made by FSP/seasonic. Thought SL350 could have been also but guess not. Even then, the price seems right and the secondary rig probably wont need a 3d card so... thanks for suggestions.

Antec Earthwatts EA430 is on sale at Newegg for $39.99 with free shipping after a $20 rebate. Now you can get "good" and "cheap" at the same time. ;)

I was thinking I could try to get by with SL350 before it craps out (if it does) provided its nothing TOO loud.
$40 sounds good though, wonder if there is 1 for household limit on the rebate? I already got one from egg just recently..
