maaaaaannnnn I grew up on Neil Diamond. My mom was IN LOVE with him -- that's all she listened to around the house. My entire family has seen him perform dozens and dozens of times. I love him to death.

That being said, Elvis is still king. There's no denying that.

Neil Diamond's music aged MUCH better. Elvis is almost unlistenable to a modern ear, his vocal tricks were basically crappy auto-tune effects before man could even walk on the moon. Neil Diamond has a lot of dated crap in his discography for sure, but in the 21st century Old Man (for example) sounds better than anything Elvis ever did.

With that said, Elvis is a MUCH more important player in the history of music. He was the first solo superstar, a Michael Jackson type decades before Jackson thrilled anyone. His sexualizing of music performances blazed a trail that you see newcomers like Miley pay homage to today. Without Elvis we simply don't have a Madonna, we don't all like big butts and cannot lie.

So I guess the answer all time is Elvis.

It is. The concept that a Spotify subscription gives me access to every song I have ever wanted to hear from a small handheld box almost makes me not depressed that its 2015 and I don't own a freaking hoverboard.

I will also admit I really like Elvis's first song- Thats Alright (Mama). In it you can hear Elvis's true talent without all the Johnny Bravo-esc vocal embellishments he was famous for. Hound Dog ruined him, it was a big hit and they I am sure his manager said "whatever you did to your voice on that song, do it a lot more." Kinda like how Smells Like Teen Spirit's popularity ruined Kurt Cobain.

Roy Orbison :^P

Diamond wins by default cause I can't take Elvis for much more than one song in a row.

You realize that nothing WHATSOEVER was available in 1957 that could even remotely mimic auto-tune. Some artists liked to "double-track" vocals, sing the song twice and mix them together for a "fuller" sound. Of course there was the usual suspects, reverb, tremolo, echo, ect. Elvis's voice was genuinely great, his stage presentation was legendary. He could be faulted for not writing songs or playing instruments, (yea, he had a guitar with him, but at best he had rhythm-playing capabilities). Sadly a lot of his potential was not realized because that greedy fuck manager "the Coronal" had him making stupid movies like "Clambake" and "Girls! girls! girls!". He proved he could act pretty decent with "King Creole" but the Coronal gave zero rats asses about quality movies, roles, scripts, he wanted Elvis churning out as many movies as possible, dude was an epic scumbag.

No one, and I mean NO ONE had a voice like Roy's, hell of a songwriter too. The record Co's insisted he wear those huge sunglasses because Roy didn't "fit the mold" as he was not considered handsome, but to this day "In dreams" still gives me chills.
