I moved into a new place about a month ago. It's a brownstone. That means it's like a big townhouse where each floor is a separate unit. The door to my unit is at the ground level. All the units share five garbage and recycling bins. The bins are regular trash cans, not anything big.

The trash is collected twice per week. If the bins don't get put by the curb on the designated days the trash does not get collected. Thus someone from any one of the 4 units in my building will put out the cans and later someone will return them to their resting place. So far in the month I've lived here I have never taken out the garbage or returned the cans.

Today was garbage day. When I returned home from work the cans were all cluttered around my doorway. I didn't think much of it and moved them away from my door. Later I thought, perhaps this was some passive aggressive notice that I should do my part and take out the trash or return the cans from time to time.

Is this possible? I probably would not think it so, but I have read many neighbour threads on this forum where members do similar things in an attempt to right some perceived wrong.

well, i guess it is some unwritten rule, apparently unspoken as their passive aggressive behavior would suggest...

Maybe it was somebody trying to tell you something but even if it wasn't you should take out and put back the cans once and a while. If everybody does it when they notice it needs to be done it just makes life easier.

Hm, I haven't had much a chance to move the cans yet. Whenever I have been coming or going the task is already complete. The next time I get a chance I might think twice of moving the cans. I wouldn't want the neighbour to think that the message got through.
