Neighbors....

Lifer
We moved into a new apartment in March. In the time between March 15 and today, we've gotten about 6 or 7 noise complaints to the Drexel police, and 1 to the Philly police.

Now before you come out and say DEEKO YOU ASSHOLE STOP BEING SO LOUD!!1! understand whats really going on: We never have more than a few people over, we live on fvcking greek row of a college campus(meaning theres alot of louder people on this block), and every single time, whoever knocks at our door says 'umm we can't hear anything right outside, I don't know what the problem is'. I even know the Drexel cop thats on duty Saturday nights by name by now. Last Saturday they called the real cops, because my two roommates were WATCHING TV on a 13" bedroom tv that certainly wasn't that loud. Its almost like if we're up past midnight we get a complaint.

Its getting ridiculous. We're pretty sure its a particular apartment (2R in the building), they're older(late 20's, either grad students or non-students), one night I was leaving around 12:45 and saw them coming in, apparently we had a knock on the door at 1:00, meaning they got home at immediately called it in.

What the hell are we supposed to do? After the first one we went and talked to everyone in the building, they said they've had no problems with us, we left them our phone numbers and told them to just give us a call if we're being too loud..its not like we're being assholes about it. This is getting old, fast.

Neighbours, every body needs good neighbours,
With a little understanding,
You can find the perfect plaaaaaan.
Neighbours, should be there for one another,
That's when good neighbours become good friends.

sucks to be you......my neighbors have a band playing a couple of days a week, but they split the living room off the rest of the house with soundproofed walls. I can't hear it unless I am over by the fence🙂

A flaming bag full of poop.

Or at the very least, fedex them a box of the stuff.

I think I'm going to start being really, obnoxiously loud during daytime hours. Lets not forget I am a 'retired' DJ....my system has been known to rattle things off the walls, and I haven't cranked it in this place yet....

..What are you then if you think late 20's is old?

14 or something? 😛

I said oldER. I'm 20, my roommates are 21....I mentioned we're on a college campus....99% of the people are under 23.

ah they suck. if they're that age, they should be using their location to their advantage - reliving their party years and hanging on to their 20s for dear life.

if i lived next to you, i might very well become "the dude on the couch" and i'm 29. i say screw 'em, they can move if they don't like it.

give them something to complain about i say.

hmm lets see what the daytime crowd thinks.

Yeah but then you might actually piss off the other people around you. I wouldn't do that, as you might need them to back your story up sometime and then there would be "that one time" when you were really loud.

The only way you are going to resolve the problem is to find out who is reporting it and talk to them about an acceptable level. Everyone has different tolerances to noise. The place I'm at has a 3 strikes and your out policy about noise. I distinctly remember reading that part when signing the lease.

Start documenting it, and communicate with the police about it. Eventually the callers will themselves get in trouble. Do not do anything rash or stupid. Simply file a complaint with the police and document ever instance. After about 4-5 more calls they'll STFU.

File a complaint with the police for what? them filing a complaint against the OP? The don't do anything stupid part makes sense though.

It's called harassment...

edit: trust me I've been through this before... filing a complaint doesnt mean you're pressing charges... it simply means documentation of the incidents... if the cops won't take the complaint... take it to the housing people... DOCUMENT DOCUMENT DOCUMENT

Sounds a bit like you're rationalizing... Just because others "on the block" are louder, I wouldn't care if I can't hear them. If you were next door to me and keeping me up (or her would be more likely as she can't sleep through anything...) at 12 and 1am, I'd not be a happy camper. I wouldn't be calling the police though. We had this when we took the apartment here... Thought we could stick it out 6 months and take our time finding a house. By the 2nd month, we were convinced BigFoot lives upstairs, and a pack of invisible wild animals runs up and down the stairs outside our door. Our solution -- buy a house where there's space between us and the next one.
