people still smoke in rental property? There is no smoking inside our house, never, not at any time, no matter how cold,no matter how much snow and ice there is.. if I want a butt outside I go.

The folks on the other half of this house have a baby, they don't need smoke drifting thru
the walls and ceiling.Besides, our electronics stay nicer and when I move I won't have a nightmare of wall washing and repainting to worry about.

It's too bad most people aren't this rational.

I am a smoker and even I think smoking inside is nasty. I would try what amused said and maybe get to know them and see if you can get them to move out side. Geekbabe is correct, they would be better off smoking outside!

Depending on how nice they seem you could maybe approach them nicely and explain your situation but make sure to not sound like your forcing them, but just making them realize the smell is coming on your side. They may possibly decide to be nice and slow down or maybe even help you seal it off better. OF course they also have the right to not do anything and if that's the case then leave it at that and see how you can seal it off better. Is it drop ceiling? Could be coming through some holes for the electrical/plubing if any that goes across the wall on top of the ceiling.

Some type of air freshner may help too but might also just make it worse. (perfume + smoke, creating a stronger weird smell)

I don't see how the smoke seeps though the walls. If they are smoking in their home there isn't anything you can do about it.

Any smoker who's ever had to return a rental unit in move in condition knows that it is a nightmare to clean up. My husband and I spent $400 in paint and labor for our last move, not to mention it took my husband and paid help 3-4 days to wash walls and repaint. We vowed never again, even though the landlord here said we could smoke.

I also live by the same philosophy, but smokers are attacking YOU.
They are the aggressors.
They are making your life shorter and more irritated.

Smokers are the new Nazis.
It is cool to hate them.

If you talk to them about it, they will think you are a pussy complainer, and it will probably get worse.
Smokers have no empathy for non-smokers. In fact, most smokers are low class and ignorant.

Now, what can you do about it?
Nothing, other than getting some more air fresheners or filters.

I always respect anyone who asks me to move or put out a cig., I know it's a stinky nasty habit. Someone like you though deserves a nice big puff blown in your face because you don't know how to communicate without acting like an anal-retentive asshole. I have empathy for non-smokers, just not assholes..

Chances are they aren't gonna want to hear your side. Generally smokers think its them against the world which is compounded by the fact that they are generally low class.

 You guys have some weird generalizations about smokers around here.
This board absolutely hates smokers.

I operate by a "live and let live" philosophy, I generally don't give a fuck what anyone does with their lives, in their homes, etc. That said, I have new neighbors who are renting out the other half of the duplex townhouse, they are smokers. A mother and her two sons, all three are smokers. They smoke so much that the smell is permeating through the walls and seeping into my house.

I walk into my office, and it reeks like an ash tray. The same with my room. Is it kosher to even bring up such a topic with a neighbor, especially considering it's something they do in the privacy of their own home?

What kind of mother lets her two sons smoke in her house? Sounds like a real enabler how old are these 'boys'?

I predict BIG problems in the future with them save your effort and GTFO.

If you don't then Don't come crying here when you get burglarized, or they keep you up at night, or cops are always over there, or they find a math lab, etc.

wow what kind of drugs are you takeing to come to this colclusion?

No drugs just years of experience with rent payers and enabling women and their worthless children.

Again how old are these little boys - that will answer all questions

LOL SCREW THAT. My neighbor used to smoke in our patio all the time and the smell would linger in my room for hours. I put a stop to that shit quick. Told him plain and simple to go take that shit elsewhere.

If that smell was seeping into my apartment, you had better believe there will be a solution to it. I'd have them evicted for causing damage to the place.

so where do you draw the line then? by your logic you can kick indian people out because their food smells like curry...

just because you don't like the odor or smell isn't grounds to get someone evicted.

They can do whatever they they want as long as it stays in their home. When they do things that cross into his he can take offense to it.

I wouldn't complain about that. I love the smell of curry.
