actually, i'm not going to agree with those who say to have a conversation with them about it. no matter how calm and rational you are i've found that smokers (my mother and sister both smoke) won't really give a shit about what you have to say about their smoking. they'll just get defensive.

while i agree that will be the outcome you never know.

but since it is a townhouse they share a wall, crawlspace something that is letting it come through.after talking to them (and them telling him to get bent) he can have someone come out and see why it is so bad. then have it fixed and send thema bill for half.

That really sucks for you.

I also live by the same philosophy, but smokers are attacking YOU.
They are the aggressors.
They are making your life shorter and more irritated.

Smokers are the new Nazis.
It is cool to hate them.

If you talk to them about it, they will think you are a pussy complainer, and it will probably get worse.
Smokers have no empathy for non-smokers. In fact, most smokers are low class and ignorant.

Now, what can you do about it?
Nothing, other than getting some more air fresheners or filters.

Actually there IS something he can do.

He can address the structural reason why the two houses are sharing air.

WTF is he going to do? Setup a hermetic seal in the attic, basement and all airways?

Smokers are addicted to the product, some worse than others.
It is cool to hate them, but you should also consider those that have been unable to quit.

If you talk to them about it, some of them may think you are a pussy complainer, and it could get worse.
Some smokers have no empathy for non-smokers. In my opinion, most smokers are low class and ignorant.

Now, what can you do about it?
Nothing, other than getting to know them better and maybe bring it up in casual conversation.

Fixed that for you... Asshat.

I have this problem too but not it's not as bad as what you describe. My situation is reversed though as I am the renter and the tenant below that smokes is an owner. As a renter I don't feel it's my place to try and change the way things have been in that building. Yeah every now and then I get a gross smoky smell in my living room but it's not overpowering or anything. You can smell it though which makes you wonder what her apartment is like downstairs, probably stinks. It actually smells way worse in the hallway from when she opens and clsoes her door. The people across the hall are owners and apparently it either doesn't bother them or there is nothing they can do about it. The one across from me upstairs has a subwoofer that really booms through the wall which I'm surprised she's not up there giving him crap about, she doesn't like noise. Maybe he tolerates her stink and she tolerates his noise. Whatever. Neither is bad enough to cause me much inconvenience. As long as I don't here him or smell her in my bed room then I'm fine and I can get a decent nights sleep.
As for your issue, talk to their landlord. He may not even realize he's renting to people that smoke. A lot of leases stipulate no smoking as the smell is difficult to get rid. You have to re-paint and tear up the carpet to eradicate it. If I was a landlord I wouldn't want my tenant smoking in the apartment.

yeap. IF it says NO SMOKEING in the lease the landlord MIGHT be able to do something about it (granted it will take a while). if it is not in the lease then to bad.

More than likely - the smoke is coming through the electrical outlets, or through the shared ceiling space.

Do you have a common furnace or air ducts?

If its not in their lease - it's OK for them to smoke. Maybe you should take it up yourself?

Wow struck up a nerve with the "I'm a victim" crowd. You're responsible for your own comfort as long as it's legal. In the case of the OP he has several choices which, if you would have bothered to read, I offered in previous posts. Correct the structural problems and get know them then talk to them about.

Unfortunately there seems to be the "I'm not responsible, I'm a victim" crowd that just wants to post things like "Smokers are the new Nazis. It is cool to hate them." and "Smokers have no empathy for non-smokers. In fact, most smokers are low class and ignorant."

If the choices in the world is to associate with people like you or the "low class and ignorant" I'll choose the low class at least they don't have that false air of smugness about them which stinks worse than cigarette smoke..

Smoking causes cancer, ruins cardiovascular health, and ruins materials with tar and scent.
Second hand smoke (especially at the hands of a neighbor or parent, day in and day out) will negatively affect ones health and quality of life.
That is the same as assault and battery.

Think about someone else for a change.

Maybe buy an forced attic vent? Or maybe higher (WTF??? hire) a contractor to wall off the attic to separate them?

Most duplexes do have common attic space. Recently, break ins have occurred because a neighbor has total access to your house using the attic doors.

Yeah, there was a recent case in the news where a friend of the people living on one side snuck up into the attic and was living there. The people on the other side noticed items starting to disappear and such, and one day the mother caught the guy wearing some of her clothes and listening to the iPod her daughter was supposed to receive at Christmas, if I recall correctly. He had set up his own little apartment in the attic and even had a laptop he had stolen from the side of the family that he wasn't friends with.

"I'd have them evicted for causing damage to the place. "

Can't just "evict" someone. Esp if the landlord doesn't agree.

Why not just simply address the reason why your house is sharing air with the neighbor's house???

wat????? that's no fun, OP attack!!!!!!!!

Yeah, he should have to deal with the expense of moving because his neighbors are damaging his property.

OP, is the owner of the unit they're renting aware that they smoke inside? If not, he might not be happy about it.

Sorry, I see you're not quite fast enough on the uptake to realize that my last two posts were more of a comment on your less than helpful, all I can offer is derogatory comments, when reply to the OP. The OP didn't ask to debate whether cigarette smoke was harmful, we all know it is, but if he should talk to his neighbors about the smoke seeping into his home. Helpful suggestions were offered by quite a few people, your not one of them.

Your response was call all smokers low class ignorant Nazis and it's okay to hate them with out offering any helpful comments. That sir, makes you an a$$, especially in light of your statement, " Think about someone else for a change" which apparently you do not do.

Oh by the way, it's not even close to being the same as "assault & battery" I guess you need to watch more Law & Order and CSI to enhance your legal education.
