Neighbor's making a racket, anything I can do?

I lived on a quiet, dead-end street for a good while. The past month that's all changed, as my not-playing-with-a-full-deck neighbor decided to rid his yard of all the rocks (its a very rocky area, I've shaved a few rocks myself with the mower). This entailed hiring a crew with a jackhammer to work from sunup to sundown weekdays and saturdays. I hate the asshole's guts, but now he dropped by to tell me he's going to be blasting :)Q) and a seismologist will be by to assess my house this weekend, then again to look for changes post-blasting. I've had enough. Are there any ordinances against residential noise of this magnitude or against blasting? I live in NY state.

If you live within city limits, call the Town Hall (or whatever they call it your area)

If live o/s the city limits, call the County Managers office. They will tell you what to do. Likely this guy needs a permit for this type of work, see if you can "opose" it.

If there are any "Noise Ordinances", the above approprite office can give you info on it and maybe take your complaint.

Last resort w/b speaking with an attorney

Good Luck with it.

Time to check your homeowners policy. Hope any damage this boob causes will be covered.

Wait till he blasts and if there is even one little tiny bit of damage to your house or property sue him for all he is worth. He has to have money if he is wasting it on rock removal.

most places prohibit use of explosive within city limits without a permit. see if he needs one and if he got it.

He sounds like he's being responsible, just not too considerate. If he's getting seismoligists to survey etc, he probably has a permit to do the work. In fact, I would say the people that are doing the blasting probably wouldn't proceed if there was no permit or they would risk losing their license.

Perhaps the most practical solution is to talk to him in person and explain how you feel. Maybe the guy is just dense.

Ignore this advice. This is why I hate a lot of people in this country.

There is probably nothing you can do if he has permits and is working during the day

I'd definitely call the county/city offices to check for any broken ordinances, etc. This guy is ridiculous.

Most towns (make that all towns) have laws about how early they can start work and make a certain level of noise.

Around here they were doing landscaping at like 7:30AM- we complained and now they can't start before 8:30am.

Well it's only temporary. I know it sucks but he's just trying to improve his home. At least you have someone who cares about his property and it's upkeep. Soon it will be over and you can go back to normal. Sometimes you just have to be understanding of things like this. And look at it this way. the longer they work the faster it will be over with and done.
