My neighbor who is directly across the street from my house has left her garage door open and its clear no one is there. There is no car there.

I'm inclined to mind my own business but as its been at least two days like the I wouldn't want someone to just walk in and rob the place.

My wife went over and knocked a hour or so ago and there was no sounds of movement from the house but her blinds are wide open and my wife said a lamp was on and so was the light over the stove. Her outside front door light has been on this whole time also.

I actually tracked down her cell phone number by calling the owner of a cleaning service we both use for our homes. I call and it rang like normal but no answer and I left a voicemail. This was roughly an hour ago.

I tried calling the non-emergency police number but no answer. After, I looked it up online and see the non-emergency is only open mon-fri.

I have to hope she just left for a long weekend and just forgot to close it on her way out but just feels odd and can't help but have some concern that theres something wrong.

At the same time I don't want to be so intrusive into this nearly strangers home and life that I go calling 911, yet at least.

Figured I'd give her some time to get back to me since I left that message before going all episode of CSI and calling 911.

Sad part is shes a single mother of one child but seems to have a revolving door of new and different cars and men staying the night. Hopefully it's not something terrible like picking the wrong guy to bring home.

Ugg... Just sharing not sure what I'm looking for out of posting this. I just hope she's ok.

Update: I DID call the cops/911 after my last post and they came by and checked the place out. They didn't come talk to me but I saw them go into the house through the door in the garage. When they left they shut her garage door.

Not 30 seconds passed then she calls and said shes been on vacation since wednesday and was very grateful for calling and really concerned about it being open so long. I told her the cops came and after checking the place closed the garage door

what about the kid? when did you last see the child? do you know where she leaves the kid, like her child care situation? or friends of the child? maybe you can go that angle and talk to some more people that would know if she had gone out of town or something

Here the 911 dispatchers handle all of the non-emergency calls as well. I would call and ask for an officer to stop by.

Her kid seems to stay else where at least half the time.

Hmmm, there was one time I left my garage door open. (Or what I'm thinking is something tripped the sensor on the way down and it ended going back up as I was driving away.) I got back the next morning and all the stuff in my garage was rearranged, hanging from shelves, in intricate designs all over the floor, etc. Damn neighbors!

They knew you wouldn't notice a few missing trinkets with all of your mess.

Yeah, me too. While it MIGHT not be an "emergency," you just never know.

A couple of years ago, we got home from a day trip to Yosemite, and  the damned garage door wouldn't open...WTF?? I got out, clicked the opener again...I could hear the mechanism working...I grabbed the door and lifted...and it opened. I checked the "disconnect," and sure enough, the rope had been pulled to disconnect the door from the track.

The next day, my neighbor came over and told me that he saw the door open, so he manually closed it rather than leave it open all day.

Just call the fucking police, OP. Not sure why you're tip-toeing around the obvious.

If you're not man enough to do it then have your wife or neighbor do it. It's been days since you've seen this.

Ask another neighbor for assistance before you call the cops. Have them go with you to knock, see if any doors are unlocked, and enter cautiously for a quick look. If nothing looks out of the ordinary then close the garage door on your way out.

EDIT: On second thought, entering may be a mistake if they have an armed alarm system.

Same exact thing happened to me. Except for the trip to Yosemite. :p

Do this to shut the garage door, and then just keep an eye on the place. You've done all you can do, and been a great neighbor.

I would just go in and close the garage door, maybe leave a note so they know someone went. Just in case a neighbor sees it and tells them they saw someone, at least they'll know it was not a thief.

I'd maybe talk to the neighbors first as they might know more information too.

why does a grown adult not know what to do in a simple situation like this?

My neighbor died at his dining room table we only noticed when his newspaper started piling up. My friends dad hopped the backyard wall afterwards and found him.

You never know whats going on. Call the cops.

If crime is an issue in your neighborhood, be a nice neighbor and shut her garage door for her? You'd hate me as a neighbor... half the lights in the house get left on sometimes when we're not home.
