My Damn neighbor's dog barks too much and really bothers me. I've confronted them on this and it was better for while but now the K9 won't shut up. I feel bad for the dog and I hate it's owners. I feel that people that let their barking dog be heard by their neighbors are rude people who don't care. Why get a dog just to stick it outside so it barks all day. That's not the point of having a pet....

just venting.

A very effective, but non-harmful way of training a dog is to use a squirt gun. Get a super soaker with a pretty decent range and when the dog starts barking blast him right in the nose with the gun.

It'll take a while, but eventually the dog will get the point.

In my neighborhood, the dog barking thing is like a chain reaction. I have a doggie door, so my dog goes in and out as it pleases. She won't bark at people ever, or knocking, or noises. The only thing she will bark at is other dogs, or other dogs barking. So the chain reaction thing happens when one dog in the neighborhood barks, then some of the other dogs will hear it and start barking, and eventually my dog will hear it and start barking. No one has complained about it yet. In my town there is some ordinance or something about not letting your dog bark past 10:00 PM or something silly like that.

<<shoot it>>

Besides being barbaric, that does not take care of the root of the problem, the dog's owner. The owner is supposed to be responsible for ensuring that the dog is not disturbing anyone.

If you have tried talking to the owner already, try filing a complaint with the police. They are more likely to pay attention when a cop comes knocking at their door. Also, if you suspect that the dog is suffering because it's outside all the time, ie not getting shelter from bad weather, perhaps in danger of dehydrating in summer months, not being walked/exercised properly, lacking proper shots and licenses, etc, then you might check into some sort of animal rights group to come investigate. If they find that the dog is in a bad environment, they will take proper action against the owners and for the dog.

The dog is barking because it's feeling neglected, frustrated, and unable to express itself in any other manner. If you do go the firearms route, be sure to aim at the owner, not the dog.

I would start by suggesting obedience school to the owner. Do not start out confrontational. If the owner says the dog failed, remind him or her that the dog isn't the one that passes or fails obedience school - the owner is.

Also, do not squirt a dog with anything. You will only antagonize the poor beast and cause it to bark even more, and carry a big chip on its shoulder towards you.

I suppose the police may be your last resort, but if the thing is definitely neglected, call the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). They are my charity of choice, and I assume they are in the States as well as Canada. If nothing else, the owner will be watched more closely.

I empathize with your situation, but frankly, I'm more sympathetic towards the dog. Dogs are social animals - more so than humans, and a dog is a family member. Just like how sometimes I wish I could tie grandpa out back sometimes, but I don't because he's a family member.

Craig
