Man, what a nice deal. They haul away a 4' x 4' x 8' pile of junk from infront of your house for free (well you pay taxes). I'm unloading a few small tables and a desk and a ton of old fence panels and a mattress, and some doors, etc.

But, come on, it says right on the flier that there's to be no pillaging. All last night people were doing drive-by's checking out our garbage and this morning what was a symetrical monument to waste has been ransacked. The desk (even missing the tray and drawer) was gaffled, one table was up-ended like somebody was thinking about it.....and the stuff I'd placed on it was spilled. I'll be surprised if the mattress makes it to collection time.

But, ya, some dude down the street has just a sink sitting out on his curb. Too funny.

That seems to be a very popular thing to do in AZ and CA. It tends to be more of a CA think that has to do (in my experience only) with the Mexican population.

That's a problem.

Yup, very common. You will notice that people tend not to put small items or bags in anything other than the gardbage can as they will wake up to find them torn open and scattered.

People in my apartment community will set out their nicer items that they don't want to keep anymore by the dumpster for other to take instead of just throwing it in the dumpster.

Even when I moved in April I had a bike that I didn't use but was fine so I just set it next to the dumpster and sure enough the next day it was gone.

I think it was a bit messed up to make a mess out of your front yard but don't see any issue in taking the items if they are just going to the dump anyways.

I've been guilty of that before, but I don't think I've ever pulled things from in front of someone's house, though--just pulling things from the area near a dumpster.

If you were throwing it out...I don't see what the big deal is. They were just going to take it to the dump anyway right? At least some one gets some more use out of it.

The sink is pretty funny though.

One time I found a perfectly good/mint condition Beatles Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Album while walking around the neighborhood during one of these "everything goes" days. I've also heard from other people that they've found some sweet electronics that people throw out because they think they are broken but the person just didn't know how to use it.

We have call to haul here. The city will come pick up stuff if you call and put it on the curb. I have no issues with people taking what they want. I actually prefer someone use the stuff instead of it going into a landfill. My issue is the mess thay make and when I have to rebox or rebag stuff. The city wont pick up loose stuff on a curb.

This happens to us all the time, and I live in the suburbs of Milwaukee. However, people are nice about it here, and usually ring your doorbell and ask if they can take your garbage first.

Dumpster diving can be a great way to find neat stuff. Then again, so can garage shopping, but at least with dumpster diving it's not technically burglary.
