Buffalo Police have uncovered more details in the grisly case of a mother murdered by her 15-year-old son. Formal charges have been made, and the son and another man are being held without bail.
On Saturday morning, police announced that the body parts discovered in late August belonged to 46-year-old Madeline Irene of 500 Fargo Avenue in Buffalo. She had been killed and disposed of by her son, 15-year-old Angel Rosa. A neighbor, 50-year-old Edwin Gimenez of 26 Sherwood Road, is being held as an accomplice. Giminez had psychologically influenced Rosa to kill his mother. Once Irene was dead, Giminez kidnapped and sodomized the 12-year-old boy, who he claims is his son. Police have no evidence of that claim, but believe that Giminez was planning to take both boys to New York City.
Irene was killed on August 18, but wasn't immediately reported missing. The day after the murder, Rosa told his older sister, who lives in Puerto Rico, that his mother was away on a retreat. However, that same day, he told neighbors that she was missing. Police believe he was trying to build up a defense for himself in case incriminating details came to light.
Here?s how police pieced everything together: a 20-pound rice bag was used to weigh down the suitcase of body parts. On that rice bag was a proof-of-purchase sticker from Tops. Detectives then worked with Tops and found that Madeline Irene used her bonus card to purchase a 20-pound bag of rice. Investigators went to 500 Fargo Avenue and found Rosa, who led them to 26 Sherwood where Edwin Gimenez was staying with the 12-year-old son.
Giminez had been convicted and jailed for sex crimes in 1985, but is not on the NYS Sex Offender Registry because he committed those crimes before the registry was established.
Police recovered additional evidence at Gimenez's home, including a large garbage can filled with concrete that could contain more body parts.
Rosa was charged as an adult with second-degree murder and is being held in the Juvenile Detention Center. Gimenez is in the Erie County Holding Center, facing charges of kidnapping, four counts of sodomy, and one count of first-degree conspiracy of murder. Both are expected to be arraigned today in County Court.
Scott Brown reports on how homicide detectives broke the case.
