High school was and is a joke. 99% of schools don't challenge kids whatsoever. It was such a huge shock to me I actually had to study in college. I had no idea how or what it was all about...and I went to a Catholic private school...it was one of the better schools in the state.

Put yourself in the parent's shoes. How would you feel if you weren't told?

I wouldn't like it, but I did it - so I wouldn't give him/her too hard a time about it.

I certainly wouldn't tell on the neighbors kid for doing it.

You've probably never smoked it in your life, people with these kind of opinions usually haven't. And even if you have, it affects everyone differently and for a lot of people it helps you concentrate. When I was younger, it actually helped me concentrate more on my work because you zone in on one thing. I'd spark a bit and throw on some classical music and I'd be tuned in and bang out all my homework. Or any music without lyrics. Pure moods was a staple.

But again, it affects people differently. Now in my old age, it affects me differently and I could never go to work high.

No wonder I'm doing so poorly in life! Thanks for pointing that out to me!

Wait...oh, nevermind. I'm actually doing pretty damn well in life.

I know many people that do or have smoked weed all throughout high school (or college, even) that got straight A's (in honors/AP classes) and are still doing quite well today in college or with professional jobs. I know many people that smoke all the time that have gone nowhere in life. I also know many people that do no drugs and have done very well. I also know many people that have not done drugs or participated in other illegal activities that have gone nowhere in life.

The REAL problem is the individuals, parenting, lack of keeping their priorities straight, etc. It's like a kid that wastes his life because he is addicted to video games. ZOMG VIDEO GAMES ARE THE REASON AMERICA IS STARTING TO SUCK ZOMG VIDEO GAMES ARE EVIL! Really, ANYTHING in our lives can take hold of us and drag us down to a state of uselessness.

Might as well just make everything illegal that has the potential for ruining lives. This includes food. Congratulations! Everyone is now dead.

Way to think for yourself with an open mind!

She knows it was weed for certain?

Depends on the age of the kid in question. While I have nothing against weed and have smoked it myself, I wouldn't want a 13 year old of mine smoking it. Especially in such a stupidly conspicuous way (if this is true).

Tell the parents. The parents have a right to know. The ones who say no smoked weed in HS.

Kids are not adults until 18 and therefore have no secrets.

I wouldn't rat on him, no. It's not my place to police someone else's kids. If he was vandalizing property or beating up some other kid, then I'd step in, but a teenager smoking pot is just someone realizing their rebellious phase in about the safest way possible.

As far as smoking pot being the reason that people aren't successful... Peter Lewis and George Soros are more successful than every member of this board combined and they've both argued in favor of legalizing marijuana. Maybe we shouldn't be so quick to label people who use marijuana as "lazy stoners;" sure, plenty of them are, but I know just as many lazy drunks and lazy gamers. Maybe our problem in this country isn't substance abuse, it's motivation.

I don't deny that there are plenty of successful and smart people who have smoked, or do smoke dope...and I agree 100% that motivation is a problem in this country...look at it this way...if the kid was drinking whiskey on the way to school...would you tell his parents?
I would.

Next week the OP will be posting that somebody egged his car and that he's looking into buying a gun.

The parents have a right to know. This has nothing to do with ratting and everything to do with informing the parents. Maybe they approve of the weed smoking.

Easy to tell the kids from the adults in this thread.

These.

I would want to know, even if I condoned it. If nothing else, I'd need to educate my kid on how to be a little more fucking discreet.

Nah, I'd just confiscate it. For the greater good...

But it really does depend on the kid's age. If he's 11, I'm going to be more inclined to say something than if he's 17. And I'd say it to the kid, not just run and snitch to the parents immediately. How cowardly is that? Tell the kid to knock it off and if you see him doing it again, you'll tell his parents. BAM. Done. At the very least, he'll avoid your block (he probably shouldn't be smoking pot directly outside his own house anyway; that's just stupid).

To clarify my stance, I would tattle on the kid if I saw him doing a number of things that I knew his parents would not like. Smoking MJ, smoking cigarettes, stomping on frogs, making bombs in the backyard, throwing rocks at kids, putting firecrackers in mailboxes, etc.

I think it's part of being a good neighbor, and I know that my current neighbors would appreciate the news.

/this. I'd confront the teen first, ask if his parents know he smokes pot, and if they don't, I'd warn him not to let me see it again.

Because if there's one thing you can trust, it's the word of a kid being confronted about something that could land them in a bunch of trouble.

If you know the parents, make mention of it....
Don't go running... "JOHNNY IS SMOKING POT!!!"
bring it up politely, "you're pretty progressive parents. i didnt know you allowed johnny to smoke"

if you dont know the parents... let it go
