Neighbor bullying me for wifi?

OP, other than the fear of retaliation from your neighbor ... why would you open yourself up to so much risk of letting near complete strangers use your access point? You have absolutely no idea what they are doing with the bandwidth you provide. They could be involved in illicit activity or, at best, downloading the world compilation of songs and movies using your connection.

Why, why, why????

I think $200 per month would be for all cable services, not just internet access. My bill to Time Warner is close to $200 a month. That covers cable, internet and phone (no premium channels).
Holy crap you are getting screwed.

I have TWC:
30mbps internet (extreme)
home phone
Standard cable (80+ channels)

$93/mo out the door

your options are:
1) tell your neighbor she's cut off; you were just helping out when her daughter needed to complete her work
2) move
3) ask her to split the cost of the internet. Ask for the entire cost of your bill.

Htf does that work? Do you have DVR's?

It's amazing how cheap you can get cable service in areas (like Columbus in edro's case) when there is more than one choice available to you.

I also have TWC in Ohio, but TWC is my only cable choice. I have almost the same service:

Internet : 20 mbps
Phone
Extended Cable + one dvr

We pay right around $180 a month.

Easy and simple way:

Tell her that your router is broken.
Don't broadcast your wireless.
Change the SSID and password..

Use your wireless at home.

I agree to let my neighbor use my wifi because she mentioned her daughter doing some school work so being a nice person i agreed, two days later i change the password and my neighbor sees me and says you better not have changed the password in a sort of joking matter im saying to myself wtf you aren't using my wifi forever so i give it to her because i don't want any problems with my neighbor.

Is there a sort of program that will make my internet so slow they probably don't want to use it any more?

Yes its called growing some balls, you can find it growapair.com.

be a man and tell her to F off

If the dude can barely send an email like he states you expect him to figure out how to filter MAC addresses?

Been on anandtech since 1999.

Can barely send an email.

He has failed majorly. Or we have failed him. Either way its not good.

Stop broadcasting your SSID, change the SSID and password, and then just say you got rid of wifi.

Come on guys be kind assuming its not a troll thread which would be odd from an old account.
What the quoted guy says is a good idea if you can't confront them for some reason. What would happen is your wifi name would not show up when someone searches for it so it would be easy to tell anyone who asks that its broken and you don't want to pay to have it serviced or something similar.
Good luck!

Low income people get it for $10 a month.

Bullshit. Only if someone has a child, enrolled in school, that qualifies for "free lunch". There is no "free wifi for po people".

http://www.cheapinternet.com/fcc-finally-ready-to-announce-lifeline-broadband

No "Lifeline Broadband" program yet exists, other than some pilot programs from 2012, apparently.

What's even more interesting, and probably put a major snafu into these subsidized Broadband plans, is that the FCC decided to change the definition of what qualifies as "Broadband", from 3Mbit/sec, to 25Mbit/sec, if I'm not mistaken.

So, if they do implement that program, eventually, I could possibly get 25Mbit service for $10/mo. Which wouldn't be a bad thing.

Internet is expensive in the US it seems. I've got the most expensive provider in the Netherlands as I like the way they work and how they fight criminal organisations (Scientology, the Dutch version of the MPAA and RIAA, etc). Currently I've got a DSL link with a max rate of 18Mbps (due to the distance I can't reach the max for DSL), but as soon as fibre becomes available I'll get a free upgrade to 100Mbps. I have the basic TV channel set, which is about 80 TV and a bunch of radio channels, and I've got a phone service with which I can call for free within the EU, to the US, Turkey, Morocco and Surinam, and the total cost for that is about 60 Euros a month. You can get similar packets for 40 Euros or so, but then you get less good support, and they don't put much effort into fighting when their customers get sued.
