Negotiating job offers

I have two job offers from two different consulting companies

lets call them Company A and Company B

A offers 5k less per yr
A has a signing bonus of 10K
A doesn't give yearly bonus unless you are a manager or above
A supports employees getting an MBA and will pay for it if you return for 2 yrs after ur MBA
A is a partnership
not sure if A offers profit sharing

B offers 5K more
B has a signing bonus of 2K
B has yearly bonuses
B has profit sharing
B is a public company
B offers discounted stock purchase plan
B discourages employees from getting an MBA, do not support, will not pay

both of these companies do similar work, and both have offered me the SF or Chicago offices. Also company A is slightly more prestigious than company B

In general I like the people more at company A, both work hard but it seems like people at A actually have fun, B just work hard and don't hang out after work.

Q: Is it acceptable for me to call up company A and tell them I have another offer that offers slightly better compensation, and I am ready to sign with company A if they can match company B?

I wouldn't pit "A" against "B". It seems like company "A" has a bit more flexibility - and more encouragement towards further education. Even though the salary is a bit less to start with company "A" - it could work out much better in the long run.

I would go ahead and try to negotiate a little with co a.

However, If you're more comfortable with A then I would go for it.

Work is a lot better if you enjoy it.

Well, even if it was acceptable, I still wouldn't indicate that company "B" is going to pay more - and a salary match is preferred. Instead, a bit of research might be in order. If one can pull up some good salary data, then they could indicate to company "A" that their starting salary is a bit low for the duties that will be performed.

Forget B. Not paying for further education is one thing - DISCOURAGING it is a completely different matter. In short, they want footsoldiers who will STAY footsoldiers.

Now, if A won't pay you more than B if you DO get your MBA, then the choice is obvious.

ok i think discourage might be the wrong word, but when talking to them its pretty much clear that they don't think you should get an MBA, most people don't return after getting an MBA

I really like the option of getting an MBA, i don't matter that much if company A would pay for it, b/c I may not return to company A after if I get an MBA. I really like the fact that they support it and they have people help you apply and most people get into one of their top 3 business school choices.

if you want your mba, I'd go with company A.

if you're looking for a way to pay the rent/mortgage with a job that you won't hate, I'd go with company B.

But he said that company A has more fun and company b doesn't.

I think you should just go with A, try to see if they will match the salery though

did you read the post?

i'd say go for A... especially if you are encouraged to do more things. job satisfaction is very good to have. and if you get your MBA, you might become a manager sooner than later

Yes I did. Companies expect you to negotiate, my last job offer I got it raised 25% without any trouble at all. Definitely go for the company that sounds like it'll be better to work for though.

what about benefits such as health and dental. that should factor in and could make A more attractive if it was 100% covered via PPO

If Company A pays $5k less, how much money is it to begin with ? If you can live comfortably off Company A's salary, go for that!!! I quit my last job to get my current one which is only $1/hour MORE than my last job but it's 10x better. Much more probable and promising advancement, private company with 0 debt, full medical/dental benefits, 24/7 gym, nice cafeteria, private and secure parking etc etc etc all of that wasnt available at my old job.

Go for the BETTER job. And if they will pay for your education i think that makes it a nobrainer.

I shouldnt give advice, I just fscked myself out of ~3-6K difference in salary between Company A and Company B this week during negotiations...
