Who negotiates the contracts with the athlete's agents? Is that the general manager? Or is there a "team contract" agent that decides how much the player is worth, what kind of playing incentives he gets, performance bonuses, etc.?

I think it would be cool to work in this capacity, but I don't know if it would be as the agent for the athlete. It takes time to build your contacts, especially if you don't start out in a firm that provides services for agents.

Would you have to attend law school and choose to specialize in contracts after graduation? Or could you start working for a sports team, and go from the bottom up?

I think some schools have a degree in "sports management'
That said, I would imagine the big talent agencies hire some trainees from time to time. I would contact them and ask what they are looking for in a rookie.
