Needs name brand reliable DVD Burner

I am looking for an internal or external NAME BRAND DVD burner for making backup copies of my movie DVDs here. I know that the dual layer burners are out now and I definitely want to get the dual format burner. I dont know if I can get BOTH features affordably but I want to know what the forum gurus think about this. If I cant afford the dual layer burner then Id settle for the single layer burner-I mean name brands like SONY, NEC, TOSHIBA and since Ive had bad luck with HP CDROM burners in the past I want to avoid HP.
I hope a DVD burner/player can be bought for <$100.
If I have a DVD burner player on my PC then do I first copy the files from the source DVD onto my HD then burn those files onto the DVD blank? I like ROXIO 6 for this job.

Welcome to the forums, Inquiring. One of the best features to learn to use in these forums is the search tool.

If you type a keyword ("dvd" in this case) into the search box just above the list of threads, it will show you all recent threads in just this forum.

The search box on the left side of the page searches all forums at once, which often doesn't help (too many threads in other forums). The Advanced Search link lets you search one or selected forums, and lets you find old "archived" threads.

A search here for "dvd" would show you most people are recommending the NEC 3500a, but would let you read other opinions too.

A search of "dvd" in the Software forum will answer your next question, which is exactly how to back up your copy-protected movie DVDs.

Yup. Or the Pioneer one as well. Its basically the same thing with Pioneers name on it.

NEC &amp; Pioneer are the most reliable burners out there atm.
 
Consider the Plextor PX-716A (comes only in a retail version). Just do what one should always do when upgrading one's hardware. Make sure Win is updated with the latest chipset drivers and the latest ASPI layer (DL from adaptec.com). Get the latest updates and patches for any software included with the drive. And flash the drive with the latest firmware for it. There is a $30. rebate on purchases thru the end of the month.
