i am trying to install Windows 2000 onto my computer. i would prefer to use advanced server, but right now, i will take anything. whenever i try to boot off the cd on either AS or Server, i will get a stop error after it says "Starting Windows 2000".

this is where i am having recurrances of Win2k Beta.

during the beta, my motherboard would have some problems with Win2k. but after retail, i tried Win2k Professional, and it worked! 🙂

the stop error im getting is 0x00000007F or something similar to that about a Kernel Trap. i have NO idea what the problem is.

my board is a ASUS P2B-DS with BIOS 1012b and rev. 1.04

rev 1.03 and earlier are supposed to be the incompatible versions. please help me QUICK! thanks

I had some trouble with Win2K Pro. I had to clock everything back to defaults, and underclock my ram (3-3-3 instead of 2-2-2). Once it was installed everything got cranked back up and ran fine.

Just a thought.

thanks, ill try that and let you know.

also, i sent a stern email to ASUS abotu their non-existent tech support.

one last thing, either im losing my mind, or ASUS has changed their rework list again. now it seems ALL mobos made before Oct' 99 will need the rework. that REALLY sucks and MAKES ME MAD!!! :| :| :|

now, not only do i need to struggle to get an RMA, but i also have to give up my board and pay some money for about almost a month.

That's really a drag Kid V.

If Win 2K pro or '98 works ok on that board, maybe it's time to find a quick buyer to unload on and start over.

NT errors can be a bear.

the thing is though, that this board is soooooo nice. if asus would get off their ass, i wouldnt be in this predicament.

its got on board scsi, up to 1gb ram, and im told it can support coppermines. that means i have a dual coppermine board with on board scsi here, plus ISA slots which can come in handy for me. another reason i want it is because i think there is a slotket out there that has 2 CUmines one one card, so i think i would be able to have 4 on the mobo. thats why i dont want to get rid of it.

I know what you mean Kid. I have 2 real nice machines in my herd with issues. If you want to go with 4 CPUs, I guess you don't have much choice in OSs do you. Pro maxes out at 2 CPUs, doesn't it?

viz

yes, but server supports 4, and AS supports 8.

Data Center Server supports 16(32 with OEM mods) and i think 256gb ram

thanks for the links, that pretty much solved the answer to my question 🙁

i am required ot have the rework done. i DO have a hardware problem, a divide by 0 error was incurred by me. that is caused by malfunctioning hardware, more specifically, motherboard 🙁🙁

so it seems that i will need to go on a wild goose chase looking for an ASUS otherised shop to help me out. thanks for the help

No troubles. Sorry that it was not the answer you wanted to hear. 🙁🙁

It sounds like it will be a great box when you get it done though. 🙂 4 Coppermines would absolutely rock cracking RC5!

Dang, I hate these new smilies. :|

hehe, unfortunately, i dont do crack 😛

this will be used as my workstation, because im getting the legendary BP6 with cellies@550 to use as my server
