Alright.

I know better, first off. Trillian all the way for me. A female friend of mine and her roommate both use AIM and were both infected with this recently. Now neither one can connnect to the AIM servers on their respective computers.

I have been searching all over for a fix or a possible problem.

They still have internet access, no problem. Their virus scan programs are both up to date. Windows Update is actually quite current with only one available update found.

Whenever we try to connect to AOL, it gets to step 3 and then errors out back to the login screen.

Both computers are running WinXP w/ SP2 installed and XPs firewall has port 5190 open for AIM.

I was looking into two dropper trojans that affect AIM, but the registry entries aren't present for either one nor are the files for the trojan.

Anyone have this problem themselves? Maybe a fix?

I haven't checked the host file, I will go over there today and try to post them.

I don't want to install Trillian simply because it isn't the "exact" same program. Some people resist change and I don't want to force something else upon them.

I believe it to be a Trojan because the symptoms they experienced prior to calling me up parallel the symptoms associated with some of the AIM trojans I was reading about on various websites.

I can connect to AOL if I use AIM Express.

She told me that when she came home, there was a pop-up on her screen with a URL link. She thought it came from her roomie and clicked on it, they do this sort of thing all the time. After she clicked on it, all the problems started with AIM.
