Needing more space, NAS?

Sorry for the title i couldnt think of a good one lol.

I have started to rip blurays and dvds to my pc and am quickly running out of room. I love the convenience of doing this so want to expand my storage size. Right now i have a 1tb drive filled. i have ~500gb more of dvd's and blurays to rip that i want in digital format. Long story short i need more space lol.

My thoughts so far have been to go ahead and set up a raid. most likely a raid 5 setup. The reason being if i go ahead and grab say 3 or 4 2tb drives i can then have a layer of protection on the media files as well as use the raid for backing up other files. Right now i have an old 100gb ide drive as my backup drive so more space would be nice! I have looked at getting a NAS and think that might just be the way to go. But it seems like theres ones for 100 bucks all the way to 500. I know some come with a drive but i think id want one without. im thinking a 4 bay. Software wise all it really needs is a way for me to see and control the space. All it will be used for is storage.

So what do people recommend? What should i look for in a NAS? I have no experience with raid or really networking in general so the easier the better there would be great. Price range, well cheaper is better for me but i understand sometimes you gott apay a bit more for the better stuff

get a pos box and throw 4 2TB drives in it. maybe use that PATA connector to boot the old copy of XP and share away.

no raid - just backup what is important.

Make sure it has gigabit ethernet. My old poweredge SC420 comes to mind.

but lately i have been using the NAS for many more things (transcoding, re-encoding, downloading, etc) so having a quad core beater is great

Good advice ^

I use a Linksys NAS200 and it's horribly slow, so I also have a machine built and it's purpose is a shared storage server. When I run out of space on a drive, I can add another or add a bigger one.
