I've been out of the loop for a long time as far as home theater and stereo equipment is concerned. My wife would like a DVD player for the living room for Christmas and I was thinking of possibly getting surround sound speakers as well. It would have to be on a shoestring budget though, I'm working with less than $400 dollars. Any advice on what to get and where to look?

400 for a DVD player and a receiver + speakers?

I got news for you - you'll never get anything worthy for $400. Either wait until you've got twice as much saved up, or forget about home theater.

be a little nicer dude ;) :p

seriously, $400 is a *bit* low...i actually prefer HIGH QUALITY 2 channel sound, to cruddy sounding surround sound, so i recommend waiting till you have 500 to 600 dollars, spending ~100 on a dvd player (assuming you dont have a HDTV) and 400 to 500 dollars on a receiver and 2 speakers. Add a sub, surround speakers, and a center channel later on (in that order).

LOL I TOLD you guys I've been out of the loop on home theatre! I was (perhaps mistakenly) under the impression that some DVD players these days acted as their own surround sound reciever. My TV is a 31 inch Toshiba which was the highest rated TV in that size 5 years ago when I got it.
