Well you'll have to wait until the end of the month to get the Q6600 for that price, but the rest of the components reflect current pricing.

Yes, Intel/Nvidia is the way to go right now. I'm looking forward to AMDs new quad-core CPUs, but they won't be here until the end of 2007/early 2008. The ATI 2900 XT is a good performer, but the 8800GTS will beat/match its performance for a price that actually fits your budget.

Allright, how about a C2D 6600 for now? Looks like people are getting decent OC to 3ghz+ no problem.

That combined with a quad core compatible mobo would give me the room to change out later.

How is that gigabyte mobo in terms of stability and OC? I mean is there something better I could shoot for or will that do it? They actually used to be one of my favorites, and my first raid board for that matter was a 7VRXP

I really appreciate it man, you prob know the headache ive got here over this. I was asleep and left my comp running and it literally smoked my den up.........

The Gigabyte board you are asking about is great in terms of stability, reliability, performance and overclockability. Jpeyton's suggestions are good.

You'll want to replace your power supply. I am using the same one but I doubt it will power a 8800GTS. Get a new 400-500W PSU such as the Corsair HX520 for $80 from buy.com

system looks great... i would stay away from that ram.

check out the crucial ballistix at www.mwave.com... it is a little more expensive... but worth the cost.

Please stay with the e6600 and DO NOT get a quad...

if you want some in detail help you can pm me

The Quad does look nice on paper - but if its geared toward Vista.. doubtful ill go that route for a loooong time(6mos-1yr). Im content with xp-pro at the time.

As far as the ram goes, i was hoping someone suggested against the GEIL. Im used to Corsair and Crucial both so which of these two options do you think would work best?

The timings dont look great but it looks normal for the high speed stuff today compared to my HyperX pc3200.

$114.50-30= 84.50
CRUCIAL BALLISTIX BL2KIT12864AA804 2GB KIT (1GB x 2) MATCH PAIR PC26400 800MHZ 4-4-4-12 CL 4 2.2v 240-PIN DDR2 DIMM W/HEAT SPREADER ($30.00MIR)
http://www.mwave.com/mwave/vie....hmx?scriteria=BA23794

$115.25-30 = 85.25
CORSAIR TWIN2X2048-6400 2GB KIT (1GB x 2) PC26400 800MHZ MATCHED PAIR 5-5-5-12 CL 5 1.9v 240-PIN DDR2 DIMM ($30.00MIR)

The Ballistix is better.

And quads aren't solely for Vista. I am considering making a new system sometime with one as multitasking is one of my biggest concerns.

Allright, i think ive narrowed it all down. I appreciate all the support I've gotten. I'm pretty confident in what I got here. I'll prob order tomorrow or Friday.

One more question.. is Arctic Silver 5 still the way to go on thermal compound?

Really...it doesn't matter that much. Anyone claiming a massive difference between any brand of thermal compound probably didn't use it correctly. Zalman, Artic Silver, ceramique...it all works.
