Needhelp setting up a wireless network

I bought a Linksys Wireless-G router today (WRT54G)

No matter what I do I cannot get it to work. I ahve tried to set this same router up on numerous comp systems in the past year or so and I have never had success.

Questions:
What type of cables should be used ie. patch vs. X-over?
How can i tell what type of login I have to my isp? I have DSL and when I have modem ran through a normal router I never have entered a password or username (i'm thinking DHCP).

It tries to connect to the internet (the whole configuring thing) and it can never get through.

I followed the guide I found below step by step and it works like a charm! WOOT!!!

You did not put ID and PW when you are directly on the modembbecause you probably have the PPPOE software runing and do it for you.

When yo use a Router you do need to put the ID and PW into the Router.

If you do not know them call your ISP to get your PW and ID, or to find out of other form of Authentication is used.

Are you able to get into the router utility? Enter 192.168.1.1 in your browser and it should come up.

I have my login and password (I have dial-up backup free so I got to pick it) but it still will not login. To be clear, I have never installed one peice of software from the ISP and I have never given my router and password/name information. I don't even know how to access my pos router I have (old one).

As far as the connection to the DSL Modem goes, there is No difference between wired or wireless Routers, or old or new Routers.

Therefore, you have two and half options.

1. Contact the ISP and ask about Authentication.

2. Divulge a little more information (like who is your ISP, what modem you are using, etc.), may be some one here would recognize your type of connection, and how it is Authenticating.

I had already mentioned the ISP in the OP but it is Bellsouth DSL in the Atlanta area. I am using a Westel 2200(maybe 2100) modem.

Your Modem is Not just a Modem it looks like it is combo Modem Router.

That clears the ID PW confusion, since it is already in the Router part of the Modem/Router.

Therefore, the Linksys does not work because the WAN port needs to be configured with regular private IP.

However if you do so than you would end up with double Routing and Headaches.

Two options.

If the Westell allows to disable the Router part and work as a plain modem, do it and use the Linksys as a regular Router.

Otherwise, configure the Linksys as a switch with an Access Point.
