my cousin just got a used lcd monitor from work, they were dumping it out so he just took one. the lcd monitor is a samsung 150N, on the back it reads that it was manufactured in jan 2003 so its not too bad. the monitor doesn't appear too damaged but the color settings seem all out of wack. what tool can i use to help him properly calibrate his monitor?

not too crazy about using a cookie file to calibrate. i much rather do a hard setting on the monitor through the brightnesss and contrast settings.

does anybody else know of a good calibration tool?

If you're going to do a hard setting you will probably need some advanced utilities like the colorvision stuff i mentioned above. It's going to cost you money.

If you're not going to be doing any Photoshop, then just set it so it looks about right, or use Adobe Gamma to help a little.

However, if you want accurate color (and I doubt you really need it here), you're going to need a hardware based colorimeter. Strangely enough, Colorvision seems to be somewhat popular among the entry level enthusiast crowd, but numerous professionals that I've read say that it's not as consistent as competing units from Gretag Macbeth and Monaco, to name a few. They're all within a similar price range, but if I were to buy one now, I'd probably go with a low end (~ US$300) unit from either of the last two.

Nokia used to have a monitor adjusting utility from back when they made excellent monitors, you can still find it around the web.

use this !!!
http://www.hex2bit.com/

"Monitor Calibration Wizzard"...neat, and free. Beats adobe gamma hands down

edit: you mean a calibration, or just a 'test picture' for properly setting of birghtness/contrast etc ? Then use the nokia monitor tester, someone linked to it above.
