Need your valued opinions and help on which mobo & RAM I need..

I am building a system and I am a newbie so I am lost. I need to know what motherboard is going to offer me the best performance and last too. I also need to know what RAM to get .

Here is what I have so far. I want to build a pretty jam up system but I will not use RAID so I dont need that.

AMD Tbird 1.2 ghz processor
Maxtor 30 gb ata 100 7200 rpm hd
Creative Labs Soundblaster mp3+5.1
ATI Radeon 64 VIVO
TDK VeloCD 12x burner
Pioneer 16x DVD / 40x cd
Iomega Internal 250 mb zip drive
Teac Floppy
Logitech Pro Wireless Keyboard and Mouse
3 Port Firewire Card
Antec mid Case
Altec Lansing ada880 Speaker System
Colored Round Cables
Toshiba Cable Modem
Sampo 21 Inch Monitor

I would really appreciate any help you folks could give me. I have been told that the Abit KT7 is what I need but when I look for them there are several different varieties like UDMA 66 and UDMA 100 and various other things. I want the fastest and best performing MOBO. Thanks again

I built my first system just about 2 weeks ago using the MSI KT7 Pro2A, and have had no problems at all. Zero crashes, and fast enough for me. I know that some people have reported problems with it, but none here. I recommend it very highly. My thinking is that if you do your homework and take your time, you'll have no problems with it. Just be very careful putting on the HSF.

Good luck

I'm thinking about getting that new Aopen mobo something 1394 socket A with the cool silver northbridge and the black PCB. SEXY! It got a good write up too. but not as good as the new version of the KT7 the KT7A, those would be my choices, the KT7A and the Aopen 1394

I bought some of that cheap Syncmaster PC133 RAM but I read the reviews and it says it works really well with the Epox 8KTA3. Let me know what your thoughts are on this combo.🙂

BDDT, the K7T Pro2A is a good choice for ya! If the Pro2A is your first build as it was mine it should fire right up. Do your driver research and get the latest 4 in 1's and OS patches for the PRo2A and don't overclock until you get the OS and hardware 100% stable. BTW thats some nice hardware you've collected 🙂

Why are you guys recommending a kt133 boards like the MSI pro2A? The Kt133A seems to be a better option now. It is not lot more expensive and the performance increase seems to be quite nice, especially if your ram can handle it. I would wait for the Msi pro turbo to arrive and than make my choice or if you have to buy now the Abit kt7A board seems to be the best option.

Also the reviews of the Abit boards are most of the time quite positive (Anandtech gives the latest Abit board a 8.5), but when I look at the general opinion about the Abit boards on this forum a couple of well respected members seem to dislike Abit for there bad RMA reputation. Msi was considered to be the Holy Grail, but after some negative feedback from end users (for example LeoV) and problems with the multiplier settings Msi seems to be down the quality ladder again.....any thoughts??

I have build two systems with the kt133 chipset, one with the Abit kt7 and one with the MSI pro 2. The Msi was very easy to set up and very stable, but I didn't like the memory performance. Overall the board impressed me, because of the stability.
The Abit board was a lot harder, but after a few days of problems and lot of tweaking this board is quite fast, but not as stable as the MSI. I would like to have the stability of the Msi and the performance of the Abit. That would be great. Let's hope the Msi turbo won't disappoint us.
