I haven't played TF2 for the better part of a year. I want to play again but I am totally lost, not that I was any good to begin with.

First, I need to find some good servers to play on, more people is better. Also, does anyone know of a current guide for multiplayer in general with specific strategies that might be on the web somewhere?

I tend to just run around and get killed, but I want to get better. If anyone here plays regularly let me know if there's a way to play together maybe. Thanks!

Name on steam is riddleofsteel.

I've had the same problem. Despite the cartoonish look, the game really isn't very noob-friendly and if you haven't played consistently from the beginning it can be really hard and frustrating trying to join in. I would suggest using the medic and pyro classes if you're looking to get better scores.

Thanks, I really should have never quit playing because it put me so far behind. I used to get killed so much that I just lost heart. One day I connected to a server where people were "farming" or so someone else playing said. It involved them being snipers and shooting us in the head with micron-accuracy while I sprinted over a covered bridge and jumped in a window. Either they had robotic skill or were cheating, I don't know which.

I play on Slaughterhouse San Jose and I think it is quite noob friendly. All of their servers are all-talk, so be aware of that, but that seems to also make it more relaxed and, hence, better for new players. Server IPs and info can be found here: http://www.bhslaughter.com/for...ewtopic.php?f=4&t=1758

Once I get my CPU issues fixed you'll see me on their all the time and I'll help you out with whatever I can.

Check out EvilDaedalus' YouTube videoes for tips on the different classes. It's really just a mater of experience though. The more you play the better you get.

And once you get the concept, try playing the spy class. I just started it and it is the most awarding experience I have ever had in the online multiplayer game. Approaching a group of players and stabbing them from behind, hearing over the all-talk players cussing and getting pissed off ("Do the spy check, do the spy check, damn pyros!") - is priceless.

Getting a back stab from another spy is a humiliation :)

Read the TF2 Wiki about the specific classes and the maps. Reading through will give you an idea how each class works and tips on how to use every class.

Really good snipers get accused of cheating a lot, I find. :)

Hey there Dorkenstein, I play TF2 pretty regularly on my clan's servers named here: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/doormanisgod. We don't have the west coast servers anymore, however. My steam name is =DiG= ArMy and if you want to friend me and play together feel free! I can help you out as much as possible.

I suggest you go on an instaspawn server (32 player 2fort for example) and just deathmatch. Keep in mind that this really isnt tf2 persay and really not that much fun but you'll gain some skills with the different classes. Once you get your feet wet you can play a real game of dustbowl or gold rush, etc. and over time you will learn the maps and start helping your team out. Another thing you can do is become a spectator and observe how good players play. I'm pretty good and I attribute this to spectating great players in first person mode.

Thanks for all the replies. Very helpful stuff here. Is there a list of servers somewhere besides what is in the steam browser? For example, I can't see hardly any of the servers owned by the steam group I am in, do they need to be typed in manually? Thanks again.

I play on the concept killers servers. It's a good mix of noobs and experienced players. The clan doesn't go out of their way to humiliate or put down anyone.

How to Play videos here: http://forums.steampowered.com...howthread.php?t=701625
Guides list: http://forums.steampowered.com...howthread.php?t=639355

Don't know how easy it is to find on the main list, but AOD's House of Frag is (I think) stock settings, except for a couple of optional mods. Oh, and quake sounds. But I don't have my TF2 set to download custom sounds anyway. It's Chicago based, as I recall, and gets good ping to pretty much anywhere in North America. Are we allowed to post IP's here? EDIT: Our server is also no-crit.

Also, despite what was said above about the spy, he is NOT a new player's class. It's pretty much the hardest class to play, and it's extremely dependent on the other team as to how well you do. Also note, if someone gets on your case about you being a "noob," there is a handy dandy mute button on the main menu. For a first class, I'd recommend the medic, heavy, soldier, or pyro. A medic can be extremely helpful to your team, can turn the tide almost instantly, but is also one of the first people blamed for a loss. Heavy is great fun. It's all about knowing when to wind up, when to wind down, when to pull your shotty, and when to retreat. Soldier is a pretty simple class to learn. Point rocket launcher and shoot. Most of the complexity comes from skills with rocket jumping. And the pyro is fun as all get out. Come up behind people, reflect rockets, don't beeline towards the medics, and use your shotty when you can't catch anyone. Oh, and Scout is the most simple introduction for people who've played some other shooters, as it is pretty much run and gun with a doublejump. It also takes the most twitch skill.

AOD, Q clan, TF2 newbies, Doorman is good, lotus clan, are all good servers. I play on Q-Clan the most. (search for _BLUE or blueacolyte)

General tips include:

keep moving... harder to shoot you that way.
work with team mates. use the mic and the z/x/c hotkeys.

soldier is a very friendly newb class. Shoot rockets at the feet. That's about it.

Just play and don't worry about dying. Consider it paying your dues. Pick whatever class seems the most fun at any given time and stick with it. Losing in an online FPS doesn't means the IRS is going to audit you so don't worry about how you're doing.

That said, if you want to do well and adjust to things, go medic and find a heavy or, better yet, soldier, near the top of your team's rankings and follow him around. If you tell him you're new he'll be oh so happy to inform you of when to pop your uber. You'll become a better player by osmosis.

I say the game is pretty noob friendly. Just try to stay away from some clan servers with a lot of regulars. The server I frequent has some really good players with top players who consistently rape eachother.

There is nothing to this game, especially because of the critical hits. If you're new, stay away from heavy weapons guy. Contrary to 'popular' belief, he is pretty hard to play by being so easy to kill (slow, backstab and headshot magnet). Just play soldier and demoman, then spam spam spam. Sooner or later, you will get the hang of it. Also, try to join the winning team if you can; I prefer defense, so love to play on the losing team, finding it a lot funner. Also, try out engineer to just hang back and observe. You won't know the good (feasible) sentry placement locations until you've been around a while, but you get to explore while waiting for 'business'.

+1. It's a pretty simple and fun FPS game and it's not like you have hundreds of different controls to deal with. You have 3 different weapons (2 ranged, 1 melee) so just point and click. As for "sucking" or dying, does that really matter? There is never a requirement that you must be as good or better than your team. Even the best players started out as newbies. And don't even bother responding to players who can only say things like "noob" or "pwned" or whatever, they're just minor annoyances.

In my opinion, some easier classes to start out with would be the Soldier or Pyro due to the weapons being very straight-forward. Demoman and Spy take some practice and Heavies are good for confined areas but tend to be sniper/spy targets often. If you can find a good build location, play an Engineer. Your sentry will do all the killing - just learn which keys to press quickly to build Sentry + Dispenser and hit with wrench to upgrade.

For servers, I usually just join through the server browser. I pick which map I want to play (i.e. pl_goldrush, pl_badwater, ctf_2fort, cp_gravelpit, etc.) and join 24-32 player games.

A couple of final tips: If you really have no idea what you're doing, just follow someone else playing the same class as you and see what strategies they have. Also, I tend to play whichever class is most needed. For example, pyro is great to counter a team with a lot of uber-charging medics (use compression blast to separate them from their ubered teammate). If the enemey has a lot of sentries, play demoman/pyro and get ubered to counter-attack.

Become familiar with the maps. This will help in a lot of ways so you know where to look for enemies, know where you could get flanked and know good places spies might hang out and where to build sentries.
