Hey

I want as many as possible to post a comment for my Daughters Marching band.

They were Invited to London to March in their New Year eve parade. This parade is by invitation only, and I believe the Queen picks but may be wrong. Well there was a meeting held between the Band and the parents, and by a huge majority (I do not think anyone said no) it was agreed they are going. Mind you now, the band has now been given the authority by the people who should give that kind of approval, the parents. Well the School Board Superintendent and the School Secondary Consultant has decided the band is not going because of terrorism fears.

you have to register to voice yourself, but it is free and only takes a second.

Please help the Band by voicing your support....

Thanks!

Mark

EDIT: here is a link to the story from the local paper, if you want to read what is going on for yourself. Link

EDIT 4/6/06 -- On Tuesday 4/4/06 the 5 member board that makes up the Lee County School Board voted 5-0 to overturn The Supers Decision to not allow the Bandto go. They have in turn left it up to the parents to vote on it. The vote is happening tonight at the school!! We already voted on it once and had a 100% vote for going, then the Super stepped in. This time he can't.

We are Londonbound!!!

Ridiculous! Our band traveled to Hawaii and Canada! London would be a blast, probably a once in a lifetime opportunity for some of the students.

Exactly what I said when I called the schoolboard. They first told me it was terror fears, then they changed the story to "it was decided years ago that no lee county student would travel out of the country, before 9/11"

IMPEACH THAT BASTARD!!! My chorus went to NY with no probs at all, and that was for our annaul trip! Terrorism fears my ass there's some political crap here. If there isn't, I seriously want to beat some spine into your Superintendent. The terrorists have won if everyone acts this way. Lock him in a box and send him to Guantanamo with the rest of his friends.

thats awesome.

I hope the school board people will come to their senses, The band has limited time to raise the funds, which is going to be $250,000+ . I want my daughter to experience this trip and am very pissed someone else is making a decision I should be a part of

That's crap. My high school band went to CHINA for two weeks during my sophomore year. I wasn't in the band, but it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for those who went.

I am seriously thinking this is more an attempt for those two to get media coverage and the resulting money than a true fear of sending students overseas.

Petitions are not going to help your cause. They have the power, telling them they're wrong is just going to make them dig in their heels.

What will help is rational, calm discussion with the school board and superintendent where you (and other supporters) can calmly show them that their fears are unfounded and get them to agree that maybe they're overreacting.

Public embarrassment of the officials is the surest way to shoot down your cause.

Ah, I went to FMHS... and was in the band too at the time (2 years). Good experience. We never got out of the state though.

I went to FMHS as well and was also in the marching band. We never went no where like london, heck we never left the state either. This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity and they are being denied it :(

Can't remember the political term but most politicians in the public eye have 'charity cases' to show how they help the public. If this got big enough that could happen.
