Hi,

I need a Windows 98 SE boot disk with fdisk.exe and format.com on it. I need the fdisk.exe version to support 80GB drives. I don't run Windows 98 at all and what's more I have no Win98 SE boot disk.

Can someone make one quick and email me it? Leave a message here and I will tell you my email address.

It's for setting up a Maxtor 80GB drive. The MaxBlastPlus software says there is a BIOS error on 01......

Version 1.20 of the same software works but will not let me continue past the intial screen if I press enter and there is
no mouse cursor either.

Sorry, but there is no way to electronically transfer a bootable disk. A bootable disk is not just a collection of files. It is a disk that has certain files (hidden system files, like io.sys and msdos.sys) written to the boot sector of the disk. Good try, but it just won't work.

Well crap, learn somethin everyday. Anyways, you can't just email simple files that can be copied onto a floppy to make it a bootdisk. You can however like Alphanumeric suggests download an executable binary file which, in conjuction with an up and running OS like Windows, can be executed to write to a floppy drive to create a bootable floppy. (But if you already have an up and running OS like Windows, you can usually use that OS [or one of it's built-in commands, like sys a:] to create a bootable floppy in the first place, without have to download an executable binary. So do I stand corrected? I don't know.)

Well I downloaded the Windows 98 SE version of the boot disk (custom) and ran fdisk and it would not let me go past the screen where it asks if I want to enable FAT32 or leave it at FAT16.

Each time I said Y or N the PC speaker just ticked at me and it went back to the command prompt.

Downloading the Windows Me boot disk now, wonder if this will help.

So far I have downloaded and tried these from www.bootdisk.com

- Windows 98 SE boot disk
- Windows Me boot disk

I have tested both. Both when I ran Fdisk will exit back to the DOS prompt if I select Y or N (doesn't matter).

What is happening here then?

It's an AMI BIOS, at the moment only a 40GB Maxtor drive installed as Master on the primary channel. It's partitioned already and has two OS's on it.

Any idea why fdisk won't run?

The board is a Tyan Tiger 100 if that helps.

Did you use a third party software for the Primary Master Hard drive like the software that comes with retail version of hard drives or Partition Magic? It could cause problems with FDISK. You might also see if you can get Partition Magic to see if it can see your new hard drive. Try also another buddies hard drive, just to verify its not the maxtor being rejected, IBM or seagate will be a good choice.

Just a thought.

Have you looked into your bios to see if there is a harddrive lock or virus protection. If that is enabled it may not let a program access the boot sectors of the harddrive.

Guys, I fixed it. It's quite funny how all it took was for me to put in a zip disk into my zip drive. As zip drives (internal) are IDE devices and if they have no media then low level activities cannot be performed. Strange isn't it? You should all take note of this as it might be a big time saver if you ever install a drive with a Zip drive too.
