NEED WINDOWS 98 HELP ASAP!

I am talking to a freind of mine who is, well, an SCU, as I say. (Stupid Computer User)

He is running Windows 98 on a old computer with an OLD, OLD monitor,(Well, around 7 years old) It is VERY dark, but he has never turned up the brightness through Windows settings.

I don't have Windows 98 on any of my computers anymore, and it seems I am wrong about where I think the brightness setiing is. (Properties > Settings > Advanced)

Help me out!!!

(PS, I didn't post it in the software/operating systems forum 'cause OT gets MUCH more traffic! 😀)

Isn't brightness a function of the monitor, and not the OS? Maybe a setting on the video card software, but that's not going to be the case on an older computer.

Yea, my video card has settings under 'desktop properties', 'settings', and 'advanced' (then the color tab), but you won't find that on all PCs.

Yes, but there are TWO different places to adjust brightness!!!

One on the monitor, and one, which I THOUGHT was in Properties > Settings >Advanced > Color...

Try it in Win2k...I am running Whistler, so it's a bit different.

It's also called Gamma...

there is not Brightness setting in the monitor.

I had a monitor that did that too me...

it was a POS Packard Bell monitor..

it probably burnt out one of the fuses or something..

I tried a CTX monitor 15 inch from a friend.. and that worked perfectly.

now I'm running a PF790.. and it's running strong..

I would recommend him get a new montior. before he ruins his eyes.

yeah i thought it was just on the monitor..
now i have a question. my 256KB vid card will only do 16 colors in windows, but it does 256+ in DOS photo programs. how can i make it do 256+ in windows? the settings wont let me do anymore than 16. change the driver? it is Western digital based paradise video card.
LMK!

Start your own thread, bastard! 🙂

AFAIK, gamma support in Win9x is limited to the drivers for the card, and not included in the standard drivers that come with windows. If that option were available it would be where you were looking.
