I have several new gateway e4000 machines that came preinstalled with XP. I fdisked/formatted to fat32 and then did a clean install of 98se. I'm getting the standard shutdown problems that 98se has but there is no shutdown splash screen? Normally when the machine locks up it will get stuck on the splash screen so you know its stuck, but this one just goes black and appears to be off.
The problem with this is that the people who are using them think that the machine is off so they hit the power button to fire it up in the morning, but nothing happens cause its still locked up from the night before. The green light on the case is so small that you hardly notcie(its a real quiet machine too) if it is on or not so no one ever knows if the machine is hung up or just not starting up.
I have tried numerous shutdown fixes and nothing seems to work. Some times they shutdown for a while but it always will eventially hang again. Is there anyway to get that splasg screen back? The other odd thing I notices is that the gateway splach screen is still there on boot up? Since it was formatted shoudn't any gateway junk have gone away or is it in the bios somewhere?
Thanks,
