Need web based chat software

So I am trying to help my friend set up a good chat room on his site. He is using phpbb but the software we use now is really glitchy. What is the industry standard for chat software? Or should we just be going with something like an online irc chat? ANy help is appreciated.
 
is it for support? or for community chat?

my wifes site uses the flashchat from tufat.com

the source is 5 bucks, we've been very happy with it
 
it is just for community chat. We are just looking for a stable chat software that won't crash every 20 minutes.
