I recently purchased a new Lead Tek MX2 DH Pro and Pioneer DVD drive. My system is a AMD K6-2 500mhz on a FIC 503+ MB running Win 98SE. I initially installed the video card and it worked fine. I then installed the DVD player and it worked - I actually watched a portion of a movie. Playback was jerky at times and at the recommendation of WinDVD, I enabled DMA on the DVD drive.
This was bad. My system totally crapped out. Whenever I booted, the system would freeze during the Win 98 splash screen. I fought for several hours, reinstalled Windows and got my system to boot. I eventually was able to disable DMA and thought I was good.
I can no longer get the video card to work at all. I have uninstalled new card, reinstalled old card more times than I can count - this was typically done after I had reverted to Standard PCI VGA Card. I even tried reinstalling old cd-rom drive. Whenever the system boots and dectects the software, it will load the drivers and then restart.
After restart, I get the Windows splash screen and just as I should get the desktop, I get a single flashing underline cursor and the system won't boot any further. If I reboot, I get a crippled version of the video card that can only run 256 colors. I've made sure that the proper monitor is selected and that doesn't affect anything.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm rapidly reaching the point where I'm going to wipe the HDD and start over. Are there any other options?
