I have 12 vacation days I need to use up (or lose) before the end of March and since neither my friends nor gf can take time off, I need somewhere where I can go alone (and it definitely has to be outside of north america).

I visited Costa Rica last year, and I loved it - incredible nature, great mountains, jungles, surfer towns etc, so I'm leaning towards Central or South America. Asia is pretty far (20-30hrs of flying) and fairly expensive to get to (1200-2500 for a ticket), while Europe will still be cold, so I won't be able to do a lot of things (no beaches, water sports, mountain hikes etc)

Ireland. That temperature's moderate year round, and there's a lot of hiking you can do. The people there are first rate also.

I would say Asia but yeah with only 12 days that's not enough time. Hmm... What about Hawaii? Still in the US but it's outside N.A. Aside from that I would say somewhere in the Caribbean. If you want some place with culture and interesting things to see then Brazil or Chili?

ya know you don't have to go anywhere. you could save you money for later and spend time puttering around the house.

but if you must go, I always wanted to go to Damascus, one of the oldest continually occupied sites in the world.

That would require (1) more than 12 days and (2) a shit load of planning and prior research. But I DO agree it would be fascinating.
