Need utility to prevent kids on EDIT:XP, not W98 from changing icons on desktop.

*** Now the decision has been made to use XP (pro) and MS server. ***

They accidently change the names, creat duplicate icons and mess with the toolbars, etc.

I wish for some way I could freeze everything and allow them to play their games and that's all.

Right click on your desktop>Arrange Icons By>*un-check* show desktop icons..... That 'may' buy you alittle time until the little 'monsters' fiqure it out

When the kids try to double click a desktop icon they often end up creating a duplicate icon in the process.
That doesn't include the ones who intentionally do their little damage to impress their friends where they mess with the toolbars, move or resize the task bar, etc.

Oops, your link doesn't work.

If using Internet Explorer, right-click on link and use 'save target as...' to download the file. I too had problems downloading the file with downloading agents like flashget, DAP,etc. Then you will get the file.

Setup a profile and login for yourself through "Users" in Control Panel.

Through the "Passwords" Control Panel Applet, select 'Each User Can Have Their Own Customized..blah blah', then put a check in the Profile Settings for Desktop icons, start menu, etc.

This will allow the kids to mess around with the Desktop icons, program groups, or whatever, but yours will stay the same when you log in.

I don't use these computers myself and these kids are too young for their own accounts. I want just two accounts, one where they can't do anything except click an icon and play a game, and another for an administrator who can occasionally install a new game.

Well there are no native 'administrator' security features in Win9x. You can create one profile and login with a password for yourself. Then you can just use a 'default user' for second login profile, but don't enter a password. Windows shouldn't prompt the 'default user' to enter a password or login the next time around if the 'default user' was logged in last without entering a password.

I am just guesstimating, I've never tried to duplicate what I'm suggesting.

But be warned, if you do create a profile with custom preferences allowed, everything for that profile will be stored in the "Profiles" folder under the Windows directory. If you then delete that profile from the system through "Users", it will delete all your stuff including My Documents, Favorite places, etc.

I learned that the hard way. :disgust:

Does this mean each kid will get their own account? Yes, I'm afraid so.
Do I know how to do this? Not at all.
Now I can set up a server so a kid can log into any pc and play his game just where he left off last time. Oh, joy! That should be simple.
