Need urgent help with scanner.

I have some 3x5 pics that I need to scan and print as 4x6's and 5x7's. Now I know that the printed pics are not gonna be as good as the original but I want them to be as close as possible. My main question is, would it be better to enlarge the pics through the scanner software and then scan them OR scan them at regualr size and try to enlarge them through software?

Any other help is greatly apppreciated.

What do you mean by 'enlarge them through the scanner software and then scan them'?
Either way, they are going to be enlarged by software resampling, the important thing is that you scan them in a high enough resolution. Scan at the scanner's optical resolution if you have enough ram to handle the filesize.

When you "preview" the pic in the scanner software it gives the little handles or whatever so the pic can be resized.

I know. That's why I am asking. I am just curious if it would make a difference in the final print?

I think I did these @300 dpi. I believe a friend of mine did some of his @ this setting and they looked pretty good.

Thanks for the info.

Scan them at 300+ dpi, the higher the better. Then resize it with the imaging software you've got; that's always worked for me.
Just bear in mind that the higher the res, the bigger the file; does the scanning software give a filesize estimate?
Just checking your system rig link, you've got a fast system; it should be able to handle large (100MB+) files with ease. Resizing isn't too intensive anyway; stuff like rotating always took the longest for me (especially when I used to try photo editing on my P2 300 a few years back😉)
What model and brand is your scanner?

Thanks Jeff

I think I got it. I printed a couple of 4x6's and they look pretty good. The only real problem I am having now is that I want to print a 5x7 and I can't choose it in the "page setup" tab. I have A4, B5, 4x6, etc. but no 5x7.

Oh, it's an HP 5100C scanner.

thanks again.
