Need UPS for internet phone system

I recently switched from the standard land line phone system to a Digital Phone system. It is inexpensive and works well.

The problem is that when the power goes off, even for a few seconds, we loose our phone system and have to unplug and reset the modem and router. This is a big enough pain when we are home to do the reset, not to mention if we are not home and are unable to do the reset.

I would like to get an inexpensive UPS that would last an hour or so, so that if the power does go off, we do not loose the phone system, unless it is a very long outage.

I am assuming that the power consumption of the Modem, Router, and Phone Adaptor has to be very small to where a UPS that would give 10 minutes on a PC should last much longer with this equipment.

All suggestions appreciated.

Any Comments?

Ny own preference is for APC products, primarily because they've never given me any hassle when I had to send something in for warranty replacement, or a claim when the equipment was plugged into the APC ups. 🙂

I've found the APC BackUPS500 works pretty well. I have one on my own DSL modem/router & 24port Cisco switch(yes, at home). 😀 Last extended power outage I had, it kept them all up for just under a half-hour; without the Cisco, I'm sure it would've been considerably longer.

Yup, buy it so it will last and get an APC. I had a surge protector quit after 5+ years of use and I sent them an email asking if they had anything I could try to fix it. Instead they sent me a RMA # and tracking information for the replacement they mailed out and they trusted that I would send the defective back in at my convenience, talk about awesome. All of my personal systems run through an APC product whether just a surger or my battery backups.

What would be the least expensive UPS that I could get that would give me, at least an hour, given that only the Modem, Router, and Phone Adaptor would be plugge into it?

Suggest you head on over to APC's Selector Tool and put in what the load is that your devices are, along with the required uptime and any other needed info and it will come up with some choices for you. 🙂 Then just look on the web at places selling UPS' (I recommend www.pricewatch.com) and see what the going prices are.

If you'll notice, I did link the BackUPS500 unit in my previous post to BestBuy so that you'd have an approximate price to work with. 😉

I agree for business I always reccomend APC, thier reliability and quality cannot be matched. However in my home I use this unit that I found at CompUSA. Main reason is like you I wanted longer run time for my cable modem and vonage box in particularly and you cannot get an APC close to 1000VA for $100. I have two of these to run 2 computers and all my networking equipment and have had 1 for 3 years and the 2nd for about a year (when I first got vonage) and they are both running stong. Both work with Powerchute if you want to use it to do unattended shutdowns of your PC.

Also normally makes sense to buy a heavy item like this at a local retail store because if you buy them from a newegg or somewhere shipping is going to kill you! 🙂

Also just a suggestion. Linksys now makes a router with the vonage phone adapter integrated. See this link for the wireless access point version, or this link for the wired version. Haveing one of these will of course reduce the power requirements a little and may get you longer runtime in the event of a power failure.

I don't have this yet, but as soon as the wireless one becomes available on the market I think I will be upgrading my router to one of those!
