Ok I know that blu will probably win, but my question is about upconverting DVD player.

On several forms the Sony 77H seems to be the best upconverting player in the less than $150 price point.

The Oppo 980 at $169, it was strange some said great some said soft, get the 981 for best upconverting.

Now everyone seems to be in agreement that the Toshiba HD-DVD has the best upconverting there is. BUT its $269 and might be defunct at end of this year.

BluRay well it seems that upconverting is NOT one of the things any of the current ones do well. Samsung sucks, sony flat, soft...several different adjectives but no one thinks they do a good job.

SO is the Sony 77H the only player right now in low end price point that can do good 1080P upconverting...it looks to me like the oppo is as good or better but we are talking HD prices.

opinions wanted I am stuck on what to get.

Refurb Oppo. Only Toshiba player that is good at deinterlacing is the XA2. Samsung BD-P1200 uses the same Reon chip (which is better than the Oppos, actually). It's the deinterlacing that matters, not scaling.

is the 981 the only one that will work or can I get good SD pic from the 980? Do they list the refurbs online?

Wow. I would not buy a DVD player, let alone one for $169. Surely, an HD DVD player can be had for that (where does $269 come from?). If HD DVD were defunct in a year it would not make any difference to the DVD capability and there would still be a significant library of el-cheapo HD discs available.

An upconverting SD DVD player can not turn a 480 signal into a 1080 one. Any DVD player that claims 1080p upconversion is a misnomer.

(but yeah..I know they all say that 😉) why not just pick up an A2 or A3 for the same price as one of those spendy DVD players? It will be no less relevant than a DVD player would be 7 years from now.

do these upconverting dvd players reaally make your dvd's look that much nicer on a 1080i/p TV? i have a 52in xbr5

yes, they look better than when played on standard DVD players.

...but get an HD DVD player for the same price. HD looks much better on your HDTV 😉

yes I agree that an HD player is the best for this but the one thing that I shoot HD camp for is the BS they did with it. Well if you want an HD player here are 8 models that output different formats and wow we are cheaper than blu ray but we only have the top of the line that will do HD at 1080P and its more expensive than blu.
but as you said why pay $169 or $229 for a DVD upconverter when you can get an A3 to do it for about the same price...but it only upconverts to 1080I....now do you see my point...MAKE ONE UNIT!

blu is no better I keep wondering why a ps3 can do better than any player out now and its cheaper and plays games and everything else...What kind of BS is this

anyone ever priced the drive in a ps3...are they real expensive to repair/replace?
