I'd like the following, as affordable as possible: a wireless web cam that basically sits there idle... when it detects motion, it fires off & starts recording video to the hard drive. When there is X minutes of complete lack of motion, then camera stops recording (and maybe the last X minutes is trimmed off the video file for optimization).

This would be used basically as a security device to record ONLY when there's motion. What do you all recommend?

Thanks!

I think what you want is doable - a combo of IR and motion sensor switches to turn the webcam on, and have it auto of after a period of inactivity. See if any of these components (relatively low cost for home use) could do it . . .

I just bought a Logitech Quickcam Pro 3000 here @ Newegg for $69, and while I was reading the info sheet on it I sounded as if it could do what you suggest. However, its not wireless...

I think most universities have policies against this type of setup in the women's bathroom though, don't they? :)

haha :) actually I'm wayyy out of school. We have this neighbor w/ a real troublemaker of a kid.. I wanna aim a camera at my car parked outside & have it record whenever there's someone near it basically. I don't trust this kid farther than I can throw him... and that's not very far :)

Thanks for the tips. While I'm pretty wary of ordering from X10 (then I'll REALLY be on their list for life), I'll check out their products... if anyone has other ideas, let me know.

There are several image capture tools that will do what you want. My Radeon VIVO even has a setting for motion capture with the Video In settings. Try doing a search at places like download.com.

The thing is, I don't want an IR sensor.. it has to be self-contained. The camera should just do a simple delta check: if frame X is significantly different from frame X-1, then start recording video.. and stop when the differences over Y frames are almost nothing. So this has to be at the software end.

Logitech QuickCam Pro comes w/ Digital Radar II... but supposedly that just senses motion & takes a single snapshot, not a video file.

Logitech QuickCam Pro 3000 DOES take video footage until the pic is done moving. I just tested it.

Way cool..thanks!! Too bad it's not wireless though... then I could place the camera anywhere (within range)
