Well..for one thing..if multi-tasking is your game...then more memory will help a bit...no less than a 1 gb and 2 gb if you have deep pockets....also..run msconfig and go to the startup tab...and close down all non-essential items that are in startup...most everything that is in the startup tab is not required, make sure you do not disable your virus program.

You most certainly need more RAM. Do you know how to check your pagefile usage?

Also, you can replace the 5400RPM drive with a 7200RPM one WITHOUT the help of a professional, just backup the data you plan to keep. The HD replacement will net you some gain depending on your usage style.

A 7200RPM hard drive is not the best bang for the buck in speeding up a computer if you already have a 5400RPM drive. Most modern 5400RPM drives perform very well and for day to day usage are more than fast enough.

I suggested not to proceed without the help of a professional based on his message. Somebody who asks for help like that doesn't know what they are doing, and could very well likely do more harm than good.

No one asked about bang for the buck. Since we've already covered upgrading the memory, upgrading the HD is about the only other thing someone can do on a laptop to make it faster. And you make it sound like you need a PhD to upgrade the hard drive...it's not that hard.

Re-read my post, I said there would be some gain... "bang for the buck" is not on topic here. We realize it is not the best bang for the buck. Maybe you can point me to where his budget was discussed? But then again if you are worried about his budget would you really suggest a "pro" for a HD replacement? That's not really being a good steward...

No I'm suggesting he don't touch the computer unless he knows what he is doing. Anyone who says that they've upgraded their graphics driver and it didn't help with the computer freezing while having multiple programs running is better off not doing anything remotely advanced IMO.
