My dad called and said they want to buy a flatscreen to hang on the wall in the living room. Such TVs are not ones that I keep up with so what is the best option for <$3000?

Plasma if you can afford it, otherwise LCD...although both Plasma and LCD in the higher inches range are both relatively expensive.

The Samsung 50" Plasma looks freakin nice. It's like $4,000 MSRP tho.

I once saw someone say, get LCD for something inches or less, and plasma for something inches or more. If only I could remember how many inches that was. I think it was around 40" but not sure. So it went like this: get LCD for <40" or Plasma for >40".

not true at all. this rumor is perpetuated by people who have no clue (not talking about you since obviously someone must have told you that). the lifetime of a plasma TV is very long, even though they do tend to be a tad shorter than LCDs. the newer plasmas have lifespans of 60 to 80 thousand hours, which is up to 12 hours a day for 20 years.

keep in mind the 'lifetime' rating is the amount of time it takes for the TV to be at half brightness, which for a plasma will end up being brither than an LCD since they tend to have higher brightness out of the box.

DLPs and Projectors are total crap compared to plasmas/lcds, just go compare the different kinds of TVs at a big entertainment place like Circuit City. I think Plasmas are the nicest though. Check out the 50" Vizio plasma at Costco, the picture looks really nice and it's got a lot of positive reviews, i'm contemplating getting one now myself.

go with Plasma as long as you need a 42" screen and up, WAY better picture and far cheaper than LCD's aroudn the same size.
if you need less such as 37" and smaller your only choice is LCD =\
