Sounds like they were using Synthol, a very dangerous oil.

Q- I have been reading a lot about a new drug called Synthol. I heard that it was legal and that it makes you get big quick. Is this stuff for real and would it also help with my strength development?

A- There has been a lot of publicity over this new substance called SyntholTM in all of the popular bodybuilding magazines. Synthol is manufactured in Germany and sold in the USA through a company called Mesomorphosis. Pump + Pose is the original formula produced from Germany. Synthol is currently legal in this country because it is marketed as a steril posing oil. It is intended however to be used to help enhance muscular size.

This ?posing oil? has been specially designed to be injected into muscle tissue where it becomes encapsulated by the fascicles ( bundles of muscle fibers). After frequent repeated injections the synthol accumulates and forms a huge bolus of oil that adds tremendous volume to the particular injected muscle groups. Synthol works most effectively on smaller muscle groups such as the biceps, rear delts and calves. There are four major risks associated with using this drug which include 1) a potential risk for infection at the injection site 2) hitting a vein or artery can cause a multitude of adverse reactions 3) possible pulmonary embolism and or anaphalactic shock 4) and the removal of this substance is not an option.

This substance is reminiscant of the popular pre-bodybuilding contest drug of escilene. Escilene is illegal without a prescription and it is probably not as effective in the long run as synthol at brining up lagging body parts. This information has sky rocketed the popularity of this obscure drug in a very short period of time. Synthol is very expensive and it sells for about $300-$400 per bottle. This new drug may give immediate results in increasing size in smaller muscles but can possibly be very dangerous if used improperly. Inform yourself of the proper injection methods before using this stuff. Be sure to draw back on the needle to make sure you are not in a vein or artery. Some people claim some pretty big "cosmetic" results from using Synthol so its up to you to roll the dice.

As far as strength enhancement goes from using Synthol there is none. The encapsulation of this oil within muscle tissue can cause a hypoxic reaction because of the lack of oxygen that reaches the cells within the muscle belly resulting in cell death (muscle loss). Also the swelling of the muscle tissue that results from repeat injections has been reputed to be somewhat uncomfortable when lifting heavy weights therefore decreasing maximum performance. As a potential ergogenic aid this drug definitely rates a serious thumbs down. But, on the other hand, if you are interested in enhancing your cosmetic appearance... It rates a big thumbs up.

The Swede to the rescue:
Here is a translation I made,

'By injecting oil into his muscles the 20 year old was hoping they would grow faster.
On Sunday he was found dead.
A friend of the 20 year old were with him during the injection and has been questioned by the police.

Among bodybuilders injecting oils into the muscles to make them grow quicker has become more common. The oils are sold on the internet.

-We know bodybuilders uses oils to stretch their muscles before competitions. The oil is absorbed and then transfers out in the body says Mats garle, doping expert at Huddinge University Hospital. Many of the substances bodybuilders inject, for example steroides, are dissolved in oil.
The 20 year old man lives in Malmö. Initially the police thought the death was natural. But after receiving info about the oil-injections they started an extended investigation.
The autopsy will be held on Monday.

The combination is the killer
No one will will comment on the cause of death before the autopsy.
-I won't comment anything, says the DA Lotten Loberg to Sydsvenska Dagbladet.
The friend who supposedly attended when the 20 year old made the injections has been questioned by the police and then been released.
According to doping experts Aftonbladet has talked to it is not dangerous in it self to inject oils into the muscles.
-Body builders don't die from the oil injection. But it is very common that they also uses anabola steroids, and also takes other drugs, says Mats Garle.
Ingemar Thiblin, head doctor with the medicolegal department in Stockholm, has investigated around 50 deaths among bodybuilders. He has never heard of anyone dying from oils in the muscles.

"Cooking oil kills you instantly"
-If it has happened it is very unique, he says.
-There might be fotune hunters who makes there own mixtures. Injecting motor oils and cooking oils is naturlly lethal, but you do not die from an ordinay oil found in medicine.

According to Ann-Mari Thurelius with the doping jour at Huddinge hospital, the danger lies in if the injected oil end up in the wrong place, for example in the blood directly.
That could lead to thrombus in the brain or heart. Then you will die shortly after the injection.
Another danger is if the oil is contaminated.
-The you die from blood poisioning. But it's a slow process.'

Hopefully the translation is OK. excuse my grammar in some places. Enjoy!

Very sad. If you read his message boards, he was warned by several people about abusing Synthol.
