I'm sending my wife a laptop. I'm not sure what I'm going to get her. My wife is staying in china for a while. I was told laptop battery chargers and computer power supplies in general can accept a range of voltage from 100V - 240V. I was told all you need to do is buy a 2 to 3 dollar converter plug that just converts the plug portion so that it will fit in the socket. I was told the transformer will automatically take care of any irregularities. I don't want to make things complicated by buying a converter and everything but is this mostly correct?

Yes this is very much so correct. And I know from personal experience. You can also ty and see if you can find the appropriate cord that plugs into the transformer as well, although that will be more expensive then just the plug converter.
