Need to upgrade my aging Duron 650@866, what should I get?

I have been noticing a lot of slow downs lately and while checking the performance it oftens pegs at 100% usage. While watching Star Wars Ep 2 today and browsing the net I thought it was gonna freeze up. So anyways I now realize it is time to upgrade. I haven't been paying as much attention to whats going on in the processor world, at least not as much as I used to. So I was hoping I could get some reccomendations on what to upgrade to. I don't need the fastest thing out, but I don't want to spend a chunk of change on something that is vastly outdated either. I am currently running on an ECS K7S5A with 512 MB of Crucial DDR. While the rest of the system seems to be doing what I need it to do, would it be wise to upgrade my motherboard at the same time? If so with what? Thanks

Either that or get the 1700+ thoroughbred for $60 shipped. People having been getting those around 2ghz. Or you could just buy a Duron 1200mhz I may have available. 😀

Yep, I agree with this, or like the other guy said, go with the 1700+ or whatever the best deal is right now.
I don't think the k7s5a is such a great overclocker so I would buy the fastest processor that you can afford.

You need to look what process is pegging out your CPU first before diving into an upgrade... Make sure its not something that shouldn't be running. Of course if its your dvd player then maybe Hardware acceleration isn't turned on.
Otherwise yeah, get the XP1600...

I don't believe it is any one process slowing me down. I will check hardware acceleration, that hadn't occured to me, but I still think I need the upgrade. Where would I locate hardware acceleration in Power DVD or if its in the video card, it's a Radeon 8500DV? So it seems the XP1600 gets top vote around here. I know I am out of the loop, but can someone tell me if the 1700+ is a thoroughbred. I was under the impression that thoroughbred was more around 2200+ and up. Is there any reason to go for a thoroughbred over an XP1600 other then overclockability or more speed? I'm sure the 1600+ would suit my speed needs just fine and as some have pointed out my board is not the best overclocker board avaiable. But if it has big benifits other then speed I would be willing to pay a little extra for it. If not it looks like I will be getting the XP1600, what is that like 1.3Ghz???

Also before I have to go dig for the documentation can someone tell me if the 1600 will work out of the box on my board or will i need to flash the BIOS, cause if I have to flash then I may be a little better going with a thoroughbred and then flashing with the overclockers BIOS, but I would prefer to avoid doing a flash, thanks

XP1600+ is 1.4ghz

Shoot, any Athlon XP is going to do you good. I'm running a plain vanilla XP1700 no overclocking or anyting fancy and my system runs great. GF2gts vid card btw.

I think any XP processor you plop in your PC whether this or that... you're going to be satisfied. 🙂

Yeah, I mean as long as it runs the stuff i need to run at an acceptable speed then it will be fine. I just want to make sure I spend my money on the best thing available for the money.
