I need to upgrade a Dell Dimension XPS (currently has PII-266 in it) at work.
It's running winNT 4.x.

Want to upgrade for least amt $, probably $300-500. So looking into P3 750-800, Abit MB,
256k PC133 RAM, bigger HD. Need advise on MB to get to fit the chip. Should I go for a Slot1 or FCPGA P3? What are advantages/disadvantages? Would be nice if option is there to upgrade in the future.. Are some older Abit MB with VIA chipset stable with winNT? We don't want to mess with AMD chips in the system...

Your missing out then ;)

An AMD chip in the system wont effect anything. in order to get the most for the money you should look into this.

As for the slot 1 vs fcpga. There really isnt any difference if your not going to OC. I would select the MB that gives you what you want. Then purchace the CPU that matches.

I got a cheap MB for my daughters computer last week. Cost $29 on e-bay. Its a soyo sy-7Iwm/l . FCPGA onboard sound and video. WOrks great. Only 3 pci slots thought. Thats perfect for a network card and PCI video card if i decide to upgrade it. Although if you plan to do some graphics work. i would find something with AGP.

Theres tons of options to look at. Just do some research and check you local computer shops, NOT BEST BUY, but a real computer store.

Good luck

Well, this is a server-type machine that will be on 24/7, I'm concern about the heat issue for AMD chips, even with adequate cooling. I'm upgrading my own home computer and goin' the AMD route...

Thanks for the input.
