I was just thinking the same thing, or maybe even offering a piece of hardware with it for face value.

Can you really by something cheap and get cash back or is there a limit on how much you must spent to get money back?

Is your gift certificate a little card? If so there's a running balance on your card. If it's a gift certificate, they either:

A) Transfer the remaining balance to a gift card or
B) Give you the money

I highly doubt they will give you $147.xx back if you buy a $2 pen

(I worked there for over 2 years)

It's a gift card. Just called and they won't let me do it. That just stinks. Any other suggestions?

Go to Omax, wait around the expensive items like computers and chairs and junk. Wait for somebody to buy something worth 150 plus. Offer them the card for 140.

Do you know how much that sounds like a scam? Scenario: guy approaches you, offers gift card for $140 cash, promising $150 in credit.

Yeah, good luck with THAT one. :p

i would offer to buy it for the person and then sell that item to the original buyer - $10 dollars.

Can't you just buy $150 worth of crap and then return it tomorrow for cash? Would it say on the receipt that you paid with a gift card? Would they give you another gift card for $150? There ought to be some Ferengi here who knows.

They always credit a purchase back to the source it came from. If you paid with cash, you get a cash refund. If you paid with a credit card, they credit it back to your card. So if you pay with a gift card, you get back another gift card.\

They might give you cash back if the remaining balance is $5 or less.
