Need to switch a HD signal between displays

Rage187

I have a HD projector and a 32" LCD TV

1 cable box with 1 HDMI out.

I want to use my regular lcd for watching tv and the projector when I want to watch sports or a movie off of cable as I'm putting 60 hours a week on the bulb.

will this http://www.monoprice.com/products/produ...011001&p_id=2786&seq=1&format=2&style=
switcher work?

Would it allow me to push a button and have the signal go from one display to the other or will it only allow me to have 2 devices output to 1 display?

I am right here, but unfortunately I do not know anything about HD stuff.

For component or VGA, simple switches will usually work either 'forwards' or 'backwards'. So you can use a 2-input->1-output multiplexer as a 1-input->2-output multiplexer.

For DVI... things get trickier. It most definitely will not work if HDCP is involved, unless you get a switch that can handle HDCP (and even then, it will probably only work 'one way'). Regular DVI/HDMI... maybe. I'm not sure how much negotiation is part of the protocol; it's not really hot-plug.

I also recommend AVSForum. You have a bizarre, technical HDTV question, someone there knows the answer.
